Hi.
(If this has been covered before, my apologies. I'd love a reference link.)
While the hubby is a brilliant financial wizard, he's a total luddite.
He wants to create a blog helping people understand and invest in the Korean stockmarket. No insider trading or actual brokerage, just helping folks get access to (what little) public information is out there.
I'm not personally interested in creating my own blog, so I haven't looked into the hosts, etc. available out there. But of course he wants my recommendation.
(Dave's ESL Cafe is my secret information weapon.) So, secret weapon people: Where do you recommend I look? |

Does your husband have his own domain/hosting established already, or does he just want to use a blogging site?
Will he be running the blog as part of a business venture or for personal use?
How many blogs and authors does he want the site to be capable of supporting?
Will he be changing the templates himself? How good is he with CSS and HTML?
These are questions that should, ideally, be answered before people can give you suggestions that will be appropriate to your needs. The answers will determine if you will just end up using a free blogging site, hosting a free version of existing blogging software (for personal use only), or end up buying a commercial version of some blogging software that you will need to host. |

I know several foriegners currently investing in the Korean market and one who got out when he left the country.
I agree with everything jazblanc77 said. Answer his questions and then we'll be able to help you. |

better than blogger is blogsome.com or wordpress.com as they are also both free and use wordpress which is superior to blogger with better and more features. |

He'll actually be paying a web designer for a real site for his main business, mainly to attract Korean customers. His blog is a hobby blog, there'll be a link from his main company website, but it's basically to provide credibility on his understanding of investments in general, and on the Korean market in particular.

Kind of both, I guess. The "helping foreigners invest" concept is only connected to his real business in a very roundabout way. He's here on an investor visa, and his customers are all Korean publicly held companies.

One author. Unlikely to be changing templates, clueless at both CSS and HTML. He's probably HEARD of HTML, but for sure he has no clue what CSS even is.

Thanks for the help - looking forward to the recommendations. I'll also tell him to look at blogger.com, blogsome.com and wordpress.com just to get his feet wet, but not to make any final decisions until I get word from you wonderful secret weapon folks.
Thanks! |

| If he has a company site with hosting then I would recommend installing wordpress on the server and run the blog there. |

I would stand behind my blogger recommendation. It's very simple to use, very easy to maintain, and free.
Wordpress is a bit complicated, and you have to install it on your server and upgrade it as needed.
Nice thing about blogger is that you don't need to install anything. He can blog on blogger's site for free, or publish it to his own domain as part of his "real site." |

I started writing a blog software about 4 months ago, but since I started teaching I haven't been working on it since.
Can you guys tell me what makes a good blog?
So far I've only got a basic template which includes a top ten list of bloggers, an article list, some details about the blogger and a most frequent topic search.
I'm working on an option to change the template as maybe add a calendar (is this important?). |

Blogger.com is okay but, I would backup what others have said about wordpress.com, at least in terms of web based blogging sites. The one thing I have to say is, if he is hiring a professional web designer and this site is going to be loosely connected to his business site, it would be a good idea to stay away from web based blogging sites. They just don't look very professional AND your husband is obviously willing to pay someone to make the site look smart (for this reason, he also doens't need to know anything about CSS or HTML).
I use Moveable Type for my blog. It is generally a good platform, but the templates are a tad of a pain in the butt to change. The security against spammers have also improved a lot since the release of MT 3.0 (it's now in version 3.3).
That being said, Word Press is much easier to use than Moveable Type and it is easier to change the templates around. I know many people who love Word Press.
One other piece of blogging software is Text Pattern. It is similar to Word Press, but some claim, it is yet easier to use.
I believe you husband falls under a personal license for all of these software packages, so it should be free with the capability of having one author on one blog.
He will need to have his own domain and site hosting for all three of the software packs above. He should get the web designer to install the software with any addons/plugins that he wants, and then design the templates (the visual appearance of the site), the way he likes it. After all that is done, it will be smooth sailing with whichever blogging pack he gets, may it be MT, WP, or TP.
In all, I would say that you should look into Word Press and Text Pattern first because they are more customizable and easier to use than Moveable Type. |

I would love to answer your question in a new thread where the answers won't hijack this one. |

Thought some people might have some opinions on what makes a good blog, which could also help the OP. |

A good blog is hard to find. But I basically feel that a good blog is focused with content that is intersting and relevant to both the author and target readers. The author should be knowledgable on the subject and have an easy to read writing style.
Most importantly, to me, is that the blog should be updated frequently. In my opinion this means at least one post per week preferably more. Occaisional lapses are acceptable of course.
Additionally the blog should have an RSS feed and have a distinctive design (this part is really optional, but does add character) |

| Thanks, I'm thinking more of design as I know content is already the most important aspect. |
