Read through the stickies on this forum. They should answer a lot of your questions. As most people seek Unis or public schools over hogwans, they are harder to get.

Public schools have a bad first year salary unless you have the qualifications for a higher level (TESOL cert, B.Ed, teachers certificate/licence). I think LVL 3 (low level) is still starting at 1.8 mil/month.

The next hiring sequence for GEPIK/EPIK/SMOE for off-shore recruitments won't be until next Dec/Jan. They have already started their training camps for new hires that will start teaching in Sept.

Uni's are almost impossible to get from abroad unless you are HIGHLY qualified (MA tesol, PhD). They prefer in-country hires where they can interview in person and don't have to worry about airplane tickets.

Find a GOOD hakwan to cut your teeth on. In your 2nd year you can pick and choose and you will have some connections and experience to get you the better salary/benefit offers.

Try Net Korea for public school jobs, I used them to secure my middle school job this time around and had no complaints with them. They were great, not pushy, negotiated changes in my contract etc.

They also have public jobs that are independant of EPIK/GEPIK/SMOE etc.
I was hired directly by the county I live in. Mind you, I live in the boonies but that was ok bye me, also salaries are negotiable, I was able to get 2.4 plus optional overtime up to 500 000 a month.

Good paying public gigs are out there if you search and negotiate. good luck. The guy at Net Korea I dealt with had the english name of Lex
