I work in an Intesive University Prep program, and need some suggestions for advanced reading materials. I need something in the line of essay/non-fiction, preferably modern and American.

You might consider Roger Ebert's movie reviews (he won a Pulitzer for them), political columns like Thomas Friedman (New York Times) and letters to Dear Abby (for the idioms and natural usage of the language).
