I'm planning to spend most of my 5-day weekend in Gyeongju with my girlfriend. I'd appreciate any recommendations of good places to go and cool stuff to do -- and if anyone wants to meet up for a beer, cool. |

I went to Gyeongju in June. I'd recommend the Seo-cheon gh, a 5 min walk from the main intercity bus stop. Room with bath 20k, shared, 15k won.

For sightseeing, the Silla Mound Tombs, Bulguksa, the Buddha Grotto on top of the mt at Seokguram , (there's a shuttlebus there from outside Bulguksa). Cheomseongdae, etc) |

Rent a bike and cruise around the sites. It's the best way to do it I think. The bike rental places will give you a little map that tells you where to go. |

I highly recommend the bus tour. But to be realisitic, you could see most all of Gyeongju in a day doing it this way. The tour leaves from the bus depot which is about a mile from the train station.
The tours leave around 8 in the morning and finish around 4. They cost about 10-15,000 won and then once you are on the bus, you pay the minimal entrance fees for the exhibits...about 7,000 won total.
It is great to be driven right to the front of each spot. Especially since some of the spots are only so so... I would have hated to trek all the way to some of them which only take about five minutes to look at. It was also great because it was so picking hot that day, that getting back on the air conditioned bus was a nice way to dry off before being soaked by the humidity all over again.
The mounds are a must see and are very close to the main drag. These are also near the observatory. The tour also goes to the museums.
Make sure to try the Gyeongju bread. Little silver dollar like pancakes with red bean in the middle. Tons of places everywhere. They also sell them at the grocery stores.
Another day you could go to Bomun lake. We didn't have time since we only had half of Saturday and Sunday to visit so we could be back to teach on Monday. It looked like a great place to visit. Lots of nice hotels to poke around and explore and I think they also have dancers outside in the square. |

Bomun lake is a great evening trip. Cool breeze off the lake, people all out enjoying themselves and usually a traditional dance performance at the outdoor theatre (free).
Also all the other tourist sites. Mounds, Bulguska, grotto, etc... all pretty impressive. |

You can't go wrong there. Its all pretty good. I got to see the national symphony play in the tombs park. They warmed up with classical music but the concert was heavy with pop-like music. The warm up was better. |
