I'm looking for an external hard drive--nothing big or fancy. I'm going to try Linux, and would prefer to do it on a separate drive, seeing as this is our sole business/home computer. My guess is that 40-80 gigs would be plenty, might consider bigger if reasonably priced. I know I can get them on the net easily, but perhaps someone has an old one kicking around they'd like to get rid of. |

Hmmm, I dont think it would work well to install linux on an external drive. What you can do though is install a second drive and have a dual boot to linux.
Just my 5 cents. |

or do a partition of your current drive if it's big enough... either way, external linux may be bad idea because of usb drivers that may require custom installation and that may be tricky if you're going to be installing the OS on a hard drive that requires the usb drivers. |

The Korean computer guy said not to partition my drive for Linux (it's partitioned to backup my old hd which recently melted), and my computer's got one slot left that I'd rather not fill yet, however, you make a good point about the drivers. I'll have to peek inside and revise my request. I could probably still use a cheap external drive, though. |

new external drives are cheap, a case will cost about W40,000 and up to about 300GB will cost around W100,000. |
