As of now it's pretty much set as a 49 - 49 - 2 result. I'm counting Webb as a win. Late returns were expected to favor him. He should pull away. However, there will likely be a recount, so it won't be officicial for about two weeks. If either Missouri or Tenn flip late, it would be an outright Dem majority, but that's not likely looking at current numbers.
If tied, who gets leadership? These things go to a vote, right? Everything I've heard says both Independents are going to vote with the Democratic causus.
So... doesn't that give the Dems control of the Senate? |

If its 50-50, the Republicans keep control because Cheney is the tie-breaking vote
Its getting wild in Va, 2500 votes out of 2.2 million cast so bet on a number of recounts and lawsuits, also there was a Green Party candidate who has 25,000 votes which would of gone to Webb the Dem, sounds like 2000 in Fla.
In Mo, the Dem strongholds haven't come in yet according to Begala, Carville and Watts on CNN
Tenn looks lost to the Dems
Mont looks like its going to go Dem
So control of the senate comes down to a recount in Virg. |

The senate's not such a big deal though because you need a 60% majority (I think) to pass things anyway so any change in the number makes a difference whereas in the house all you need is a simple majority to do whatever you want. |

yeah it takes 60 votes to kill debate an move to a vote so that doesnt make much of a difference
The House is what I wanted, the subpena power is the key there and now the Dems have it.
As I said on another board, if I was a Bushie I'd be at the paper shredder right now

Possibly.
Dem or Repub or whomever and *especially* the voters--those Diebold machines/software are bad business--The HBO Diebold documentary--did you see how easy it is to switch votes in the central unit that tallies everything from the individual machines?
No one would ever know and often there's be no way to prove/disprove it. |

I'm ready to call the remaining three as Dem wins. That makes it 49 - 49 - 2 as I said before. The guys on MSNBC are calling that Dem control. That is only possible if the independents are involved on the Dem side, which is what all the pundits have said on MSNBC.
It has been pointed out that real control in the Senate exists only with a 60% majority. However, even a simple majority allows them to control committees, no? More importantly, it's a psychological win.
I'll take it. |

You took the words right out of Rush's mouth.
Seriously, I'm sure there will be some neo-cons saying that tomorrow morning. |

Sounds to me like it's pretty much a done deal that the Democrats have taken back Congress ... I'll sure sleep alot better tonight if Republicans can at least retain the Senate :>) Anyway, it was a good long run and I hope the country doesn't go from wine and roses to wreck and ruin. Taxes here we come! The money will start looking for safer havens and the economy will surely take a dive... |

yet all the Republicans can say is, "oh here comes the taxes."
The US Senate is going to be close. Webb is not a win yet..last I checked Montana, Missouri and Virginia are still a toss up. For the Demcrats to win the Senate they would need to pick up all three. There is still the question whether the two independents (even though they said they will cacus with the Democrats) will be up for grabs in terms of votes. |
