|
|
One of the disadvantages I've experienced with living in small to mid-size cities in Korea is the lack of organized social clubs in which to meet people (hiking, dancing, etc.). I'm tired of having a "hit-or-miss" social life centered around the bar scene. I have two job offers on the table (details in a thread created in the Job Discussion Forum), one from an institute in Seoul and another from a school in Suwon. The Suwon position is kind of a cushy job, but I'm wondering about the social scene there. Would I find more of the same kind of social scene in Suwon? Should I just take the plunge and live in Seoul? Thanks. |

Thanks for posting this. I'd be interested in the response as I'm moving to Suwon for a new position. For me, it's still a huge step up as I've been living and working in a rural area for the last year. Isolation has been pretty rough but at least I was at a really good school with great teachers and students. It'll be nice to be back in civilization again even if it's only a mid-size city. I've looked around a bit myself and I haven't really found much from a social perspective for ex-pats. I'm sure there is, though. Anyway, at least it's only half an hour by train into Seoul. |

It's half an hour to the southern tip of Seoul, which has even less than Suwon. To get anywhere meaningful it will take a while longer.
I lived in the northern tip of Suwon for a year. It was mildly isolated but I spent all my weekends in Seoul with no real problem.
I measure quality of life in this country based on how close you are to Seoul. Suwon is okay, but get used to meeting Christians and seeing red crosses everywhere. |

Oh yeah, should have mentioned the food. Suwon is a great place for Korean food if you're not a vegetarian. If you want vegetarian or non-Korean food, the options are more limited. |
