As a lover of music, it really boggles my mind that almost all great bands came from one single country. From Beatles (general pop), Heavy (Black Sabbath, Led Zep), Progressive (Pink Floyd, Radiohead), Punk (Clash, Sex Pistol), Sync pop (Depeche Mode, Erasure), Goth (Siouxsie & the Banshees, Joy Division), and so many I cannot count.

Ok, question then, why so many?

Is it perhaps because

1) Bigger US market (English obvisouly) gives band more incentive (some french hip hop artists are great but nobody knows them in the US)
2) Like Brazil in Football, they just have great modern music tradition and it just rubs potential bands in a positive way
3) Culture that embraces creativity
4) Naturally talented
5) Or who knows...

1. The dole!!! Seriously. The wefare state used to allow young people to not have to work if they really didn't want to. Many young men had the time on their hands to learn instruments and form bands.

2. English. Singing in English helped popularise Brit music in the USA and elsewhere.

3. Elvis!!! (American rock 'n' roll) I don't know how many British rockstars who said they got interested in performing music after hearing Elvis.

....There's probably a more accurate sociological reason but I don't know.

Surely you mean Cliff Richard!

I mean, to this day, we still refer to Elvis as "The American Cliff" and ours didn't even overdose on deep-fried-banana-cheese-burgers.

Yeah cliff! You go girl!
