My boss is having troubles finding a replacement for me.....so....she said 'you can't leave until I find a new teacher'.....I told her I had to be out of here no later than the 26th of August......3 school weeks after I was supposed to be finished. Am I out of line telling her I want a raise in my current salary because I am staying 3 extra (painful) weeks??

the person that needs the relationship less has all the power. if you ask for a reasonable raise, what can your boss do? either say no and risk you leaving, or say yes. why not?

Your visa probably expires on your last day of work. Hit your boss up for an all-expenses-paid trip to Tokyo on your official final day of work. Tell her if you don't go it will be illegal and you refuse to work her illegally. Maybe that will make it less profitable to rip you off.

That would be nice (visa run) but you don't have to do one if you stay at the same school....my visa was already updated (the boss took me to the immi office)

Gee, doesn't that tell you how your boss views you? "You can't leave until I find a replacement". Are you chattel? Cattle? I mean, you obviously don't mean anything to her...you are being used. When you are of no value to her, do you think she will really give a crap if you have a roof over your head, food in your stomach? You have to take care of yourself and to hell with everyone else...

Were those her exact words or was it something like : Could you stay until we find another teacher...or some variation of this...

Before we all go and lynch the boss lets make sure what the story is here!

Perhaps the boss is in a bind with no teachers and classes to be taught.

Perhaps the boss is an idiot as portrayed by the OP.

It would be stupid to jump to a conclusion about either choices at this point.

If the boss asked you to stay longer you have 2 choices:

Agree.

Leave at the end of your contract.

No need to demand anything or threathen with anything.

If you don't want to stay...then your contract ends, you leave, no problem. If you decide tp leave make it clear you completed your contract and start finalizing the employement by discussing the air ticket and severance.

If you stay you just fatten up your wallet by earning 3 extra weeks of pay.

If all else fails, tell the boss that you were accepted into an MA program back in (Your country here) which begins in late August, early Sept. - and get the hell out of there. If the boss has an ounce of integrity, she will understand.

Sounds like the Korean female panic mode: You can't leave untill I find another teacher! = This is what she would have said if she knew how:
Quote:
Please don't leave me! My business will fail if I don't have someone else as good as you! I know I should have been more diligent about finding someone else, but as usual, something went wrong and the teacher that I had lined up to take your place chose another school for more money, now I have to look for another teacher...please please don't leave!

Of course, I could be reading too much into this and be completely wrong. In that case, I defer in advance to the OP or any other poster who challenges my assessment .

We told our last boss that we wanted 100,000 extra (above our salary) a day for any time we stayed beyond our contract. They would have accepted it but they also would have had to splurge for 2 more tickets at 1.5 mil a pop (as they had had to buy return), plus overstay fines as they wouldn't have gotten their act together fast enough to do anything at immigration. hmm.... an extra 5 mil for a week of foreign teachers? We left the day before our tickets became void. No argument from them.

So to answer your question, yes, ask for a raise and prorated severance. If they don't want to pay, tell them you want your ticket home.

Yeah, they are making you do a favour for them, a major one, so you need something in return. Need.

A friend of mine just got out of a contract by saying he found out his ex-girlfriend back home is pregnant and he's going to be a father.

Why is it painful for you?

Also, has your boss treated you fairly thus far? Has the relationship been good?

It's not completely unheard of to return good with good rather than trying to extort her like some are suggesting. Of course, I say this only pending her treatment of you. If it's been a year of problems, I wouldn't be so willing to help out.

It's painful because I have a bunch of miserable brats and elementary school kids who don't listen....
I have been treated fairly...but I am staying beyond my contract...and I think I should be compensated for doing so (It is also cutting into the amount of time that I will be able to go home)
