From Alex Ferguson:

He has adapted well to the Premiership and is probably the best off-the-ball player we have.
|
Does that suggest that he is a bit useless when he has the ball?
Well it will keep the Korean Broadcasters happy for a while anyway. |

The opposite!. Obviously you never played soccer, or ice hockey for that matter.
Off the ball drills are standard: Pass, run, receive pass, ... repeat.
The drill really develops passing in traffic ability.
It's a HUGE compliment to suggest that, on one of the best teams in England, he is most competent at such an important skill, especially for a midfielder. They don't sign him to big contracts for the heck of it! They know how skilled he is. He isn't a finisher, and only on a Korean national team without any elite strikers would a midfielder be counted on to try and score, as he pressed to do in 2006, contrary to his natural role on a team.
Park Ji Sung is truly a worldclass soccer player. I saw it in 2002 when almost EVERY Korean I met refused to acknowledge it, underplaying him in favour of a half dozen yahoos on the Korean national team, guys who wouldn't be able to hold Park's towel if they tried. Then when Park signed an enormous contract to play for ManU. SUDDENLY he is a Korean hero overnight. Koreans missed the boat on him. I remember being puzzled, not knowing why. Most people are blind, I guess, don't watch the play closely, simply chant and follow the ball and don't bother using analytical skills, looking but not seeing. |
