Hi, we're a couple newly arrived near Gwangju, south-east of Seoul. We were wondering if there's anyone around who knows the area and can give some info as to what goes on round here. We haven't landed quite where we thought in terms of location and would really appreciate any help or advice. After four really good years in nice places in Taiwan, our town/village feels a bit isolated.
Thanks very much

I worked in Gwangju 2004-5. When I was there, the foreigner hangout was Joki-Joki. We met up there on Wednesday night. Joki-Joki is close to the city hall. Also, the 3-1 bus goes to Moran Market. There you can get on the subway. The bus stop is across the street from the stadium. |

That's because it is isolated... Some parts are developed, but many more parts are pretty much "in the sticks"...
Get to know the buses that travel to different places (Seoul, Moran, Bundang)...Buses are a cheap fast way of getting around.. |

I'd like to invite you down to our little foreigner pub called "Mike and Dave's Speakeasy"
We've been open for about 8 months now and are busy every weekend.
We have trivia nights, darts tournaments or open mic nights on thursdays.
We book live bands on Friday nights. There is a DJ on Saturday nights. Sundays we play poker and scrabble and watch movies and sports.
Our signature dish is a soft shelled taco with hot sauce. It's as close to mexican as you'll find here and it's delicious. Speakeasy is the easiest place to get connected with other foreigners and find out about living in Gwangju. We are located right downtown about 2 minutes from the Grand Hotel. There's a map on the website

see you at speakeasy! |
