it seems that every time my wife browses through korean websites; the next day my antivirus program tells me I have a new virus. Confused

today it says I have a virus called "trojan startpage 568" and it can do nothing to it.

I downloaded a program called trojan remover from simply super software and no luck either. Confused

do you know how I can kill this thing?

Just out of curiosity, could you post what your a/v program is?
Which firewall do you use?
Which browser?

Anyway my solution to a similar problem was to get my wife her own computer.

As for your immediate problem, this claims to get rid of a wide variety of Trajan Startpage varients:

Bulsajo

I tried the program you posted but my antivirus still reports the trojan.

I am using bitdefender 9 professional plus along with their firewall and program/script/dial/cookie control

the scan I ran a few minutes ago says:

C:\Documents and Settings\ed\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\2L38SBUT\icon02[1].cab=>icon02.ocx Infected: Trojan.Startpage.568
C:\Documents and Settings\ed\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\2L38SBUT\icon02[1].cab=>icon02.ocx Deleted
C:\Documents and Settings\ed\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\2L38SBUT\icon02[1].cab Update failed
C:\Documents and Settings\ed\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WEQNIY8J\icon02[1].cab=>icon02.ocx Infected: Trojan.Startpage.568
C:\Documents and Settings\ed\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WEQNIY8J\icon02[1].cab=>icon02.ocx Deleted
C:\Documents and Settings\ed\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WEQNIY8J\icon02[1].cab Update failed
C:\Documents and Settings\ed\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WEQNIY8J\icon02[2].cab=>icon02.ocx Infected: Trojan.Startpage.568
C:\Documents and Settings\ed\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WEQNIY8J\icon02[2].cab=>icon02.ocx Deleted
C:\Documents and Settings\ed\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WEQNIY8J\icon02[2].cab Update failed

it looks like 3 viruses and I can't find a way to get rid of them.

googling the name didn't help.

what should I do now?

p.s. I am using IE 6

Follow the instructions HERE and you should be able to kill your problem.

In addition to following those instructions, you should also check to see if any of the sites that she visited installed any third party programs onto your computer. This happens a lot when sites run instals in the background and put AV scanners on your system, for example, that report false infections and then want you to pay for a license to remove it. This is not to mention the fact that Koreans are click happy when it comes to their surfing habits and often, accidentally, allow all sorts of crap to run on their computers when they are prompted (my wife included!).

All of those files are in your temp internet folder. Get Ccleaner and it will wipe them. Or delete them yourself.

Then, sorry, but tell your wife not to click "Yes" to every window that pops up from Korean sites. And stop using IE...

Preventative Maintenance = Get an adware/spyware blocker on your PC asap. You can either download some good ones or buy some. Speaking of which, does anyone have a good link for him?

Buying one - Spyware Doctor is great. Have used it in the past. Though no longer since I Have Norton's.

Yes...yes...I know. Norton's is not the best. However, I am brand loyal (when the brand never gives me problems and does its' job effectively.)

Bulsajo:

I was talking to my wife about her having her own computer.

we do have a second one that is a little older and it wouldn't be hard to set it up but she says that we would need to install another internet connection in the house then pay a large monthly fee for both.

is this the case for 2 internet connections?

if you are suggesting we plug both computers into one plug, the problem is the other computer is in a room on the other side of the house.

Just buy a router. Wireless if it's the other end of the house.

Come on, Ed! You should have asked EdInstead!

(sorry, I was just dying to say that).

Getting a router is exactly what you should do. Just don't tell your internet provider because they don't really like it when you do that. They will likely try to charge you a fee for it and try to lease you one of their crappy. used routers or hubs as well (your own equipment will be better, guaranteed).
