My musical tastes were in a state of flux.
I lucked out.
I missed a Warrant concert because I had to work.
Instead, I saw Elvis Costello. |

| Amazing - my first concert was Elvis Costello, too. It was first tour of the US. He played about 45 minutes, broke a string, got angry and stalked off. I liked him anyway. |

| I was a bit into stuff in those days, so I can't recall whether it was Pink Floyd or Paul McCartney. Paul was excellent and I think Pink Floyd was also. It was a little hazy. Correction, I was a little hazy. I can't remember the correct ordering of the 80s. I think '84 came before '85, but who really knows. There is no video evidence. |

I believe from speaking with friends there are two types of people. those who go to watch live concerts, and those who go to watch live sport.
I've never seen a live concert and don't feel I've missed out. I choose to spend the money on live sport. I don't think there is anything better in the world than being at a sporting event watching sport.
In no way am I trying to start an arguement. I'm just saying I've never been to a concert! |

I totally disagree. I enjoy both, as do some of my friends. In fact, I might even go out on the limb a little further and say that generally these are the same people. People who like to go out to public events and have a good time with a lot of other people. Both events are generally party atmospheres with a lot of fun-loving people. Not opposites in my book. |

My first, first concert was when I was in middle school and my school's jazz band was the opening act for a trumpeter/comedian (odd-combination, the more I think about it) named Pete Barbuti (amazingly enough, he has a webpage, where you can listen to his jokes: http://www.barbuti.com ). We were doing a fundraiser for the community's Jazz Festival Society.
But my my first rocknroll concert was Faith No More and Metallica and Guns-n-Roses in Houston, Texas in 1993(-ish).
We got free, floor tickets because we volunteered to work someplace or something; the South Carolina guy living down the hall from my dorm room got me to sign up, but I don't ever remember working. At the Astrodome, on the floor, security opened up a sealed off area immediately in front of the stage, and they gave out wrist bands to only a few (hundred) people to get it there. So I basically saw the whole concert from the front row (or about five or six people back).
Unfortunatley, I was also forced to endure being exposed to Axl Rose's biker shorts' displayed genetalia for the duration of their show.
They were great, though, as was Metallica. Faith No More was great, too, but I wasn't familiar with their music then. |

| Metallica/Guns N' Roses, Olympic Stadium, Montreal, 1992. James Hetfield blew up on stage, Guns N' Roses made everyone wait for 2 hours after that, they played 7 songs with the worst sound I've ever heard then stormed off the stage......huge riot followed.....ROCK N' ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

peter gabriel, security tour, 1982, the tour that was recorded to become his next album- the double "Plays Live" album.
And it was the first time a musician crowd-surfed into the audience with a wireless mic- awesome.
I was on the end seat next to the stairs and was toking away on something passed to me when I felt a tap on my shoulder and looked up to see a cop.
Well, after a second I realized it wasn't a cop but a security guard, and he said to me "Is that a joint?"
Frozen, I managed to stammer out "n-no."
He said, "Whatever, can I have a hit anyway? Great show eh?"
The good old days indeed...

One of those bands that DO sound BETTER live. Their concerts have a good rep and I got to see first hand why, back in 1987. Took my girlfriend, as Glass Tiger was also on the bill, but that band performed so badly, even GT fans thought so, coming off a hit song. I didn't mind. I got TC and RR rockin' the house and my gal with me all night long (memorable night ). |

| Some of you are old enough to remember 'Norman' and 'Sad Movies (Always Make Me Cry) sung by the bleached blond Linda Thompson (I think). She and a bunch of other mega-stars were on a Dick Clark tour back in the early 60's. Terrific stuff. |
