I had some thought that this was the case before I came here, partly based on the flames I saw on Dave's. eg "You are only a player here, you were a loser back home" etc.
Almost as soon as I got here, (I am in Daegu) I heard different things. One westerner even told me that most Korean parents would prefer their daughter to be a prostitute than marry a westerner. I have actually mentioned this statement to a couple of Korean friends and a few agreed and the other two were like "well its not that bad."
Anyway, I'm just curious what people think. Is this a Daegu thing? I keep hearing that its the most conservative city in Korea. Is Seoul a lot different as far as the way Korean women are?
Before people start making fun of my nickname on here, it has nothing to do with my prowess or lackthereof with women, it comes from a gaming ㅜnickname.
I am dating a Korean at the moment, so I'm not trying to say it's hopeless or anything, but so far it seems that I had it easier back home than here.
What are other's experiences? |

I find dating is easy.
But yeah, thats true that marriage is a whole other ballgame.
Also I noticed the older generation particularly in conservative areas (well, when I lived in Busan - and Daegu reminded me a lot of the Busan conservativeness without the cool mountain/beach scene of Busan). But the older MALE generation almost ALWAYS made comments whenever I was walking around down there with my then Korean girlfriend in Busan.
It seems that in Seoul, there are quite a few more Korean women who moved up from other parts of the country, and therefore living alone away from the family. They don't have to deal with that same older generation male thing in that same way. Plus there are large young areas where the older generation just simply doesn't go at all - HongDae & Shinchon come to mind.
Regardless, dating is easy. Meeting a girl's close friends and family and such isn't easy.. meeting her family comes right about the time you are actually walking down the marriage aisle. They are just generally extremely reluctant to introduce you to anyone close to them until right about that time.
Again.. dating is totally different.. very easy. Particularly first dates. |

How do you mean? Getting them or getting lucky on them?

I guess fortunately I can't understand the comments, but I have seen a lot of stares, although I get this sometimes alone so who knows.
I wonder if there's a class issue with respect to marriage, because the girl who is the daughter of the owner of a small restaurant near where I live is married to an American soldier and he seems fine with it. I would suspect for lower class Koreans, it might at least be not seen as much of a downgrade or perhaps an upgrade, and maybe for middle and upper class Koreans a serious step down?
Anyway, I'm not necessarily looking to get married anytime soon, but it sucks that the older generation is this prejudiced. |

Search seems to work fine for me. However if you at least tried, that's cool.
All depends where you are. Dating Korean women in Seoul is much easier as they generally less conservative and more open to interracial relationships. In the countryside it is a much bigger challenge as they have not been exposed to foreigners as much and attitudes are very conservative.
I think you would find this in most countries all around the world. Korea is no different. Good luck anyway.
I predict ugly mudslinging about page 6 Homer. |

I reckon most Korean girls will date a foreigner if the inclination takes them. Especially in Seoul. Korean women are a surprisingly mixed bunch. You can find lots of different 'mindsets'.
Marriage........The 'typical' set of Korean parents will probably not mind too much if the foreigner has good job prospects. |

What is paramount for Korean parents to my humble experience.
1. Good University Diploma (masters and following)
2. Shows Good Character (will be discussed later)
3. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
If you have these, don't worry. You better score 2/3. |

Typically, Korean parents do want their daughters, at least, to marry Korean. But there are some changing attitudes as older Koreans becomes more aware of the west. Ultimately, if I were trying to put it best, Korean parents simply don't want their daughters to marry an ESL Teacher, lol...
As far as casual dating goes, you never really hit the parents obstacle. Lets be honest, if you meet a girl out on a drunken night out in Itaewon and take her home the first night, the likelihood that you'll be meeting the parents in a few months is very unlikely indeed. Then you always have girls who are just wild, and could care less what mother and father think.
I would have to say that its definitely easier for guys who would struggle to get laid back home, to get laid here. The conversational element is removed for those who struggle with it, and foreigners are 'exotic', lol... or maybe those guys removed from their previously stifling environment come here with the necessary confidence after hearing the endless stories of how easy it is to pick up a girl in Itaewon... |

I've said it before and I'm saying it again. Who cares? If some new guy comes on here to talk about something that's been done over and over, who cares? He wasn't here before to talk about it. Or, in some cases, things have changed. Maybe someone doesn't want to revive an old thread. Maybe it's a bit of a different slant on things.
If the new crowd isn't allowed to discuss anything that's ever been discussed on this board before EVER, then what is there left to talk about? Contracts? Done. Kimchi? Done. Korean food? Done. Apologists? Done. Housing? Done. Chicks? Done. What has never been discussed on here before? Why not just shut down the cafe? It's all been talked about. Sorry folks. Shows over. Time to go home. |

Calm down peg or you might have an anurism!
All that was mentionned is perhaps a search would have been good.
All I said is: lets see what familiar direction this discussion takes...and there are certain topics do do always follow similar patterns.....let the newbie post and get feedback. I hope he gets what he needs as well. |

I have to agree with the OP that it's easier pulling a bird back home. The girlfriend keeps far too tight a leash on me here. |

| i guess you could say easier back home, but i never met one like my GF, who i wanted to marry. that being said it makes me feel GREAT when strangers (usually girls) argue over who has to sit next to the 오ㅐ국인 터개비 on the subway. that's right ladies, i'll steal your gold medals and run you over with a tank. watch out. |
