So I had nothing left to drink after my beers last night, until I found a bottle of Ouzo, AKA minging Greek spirit. Drank all of that, and the next thing I remember is waking up this morning next to a fat chick.
Don't touch Ouzo!!! |

Where did you find ouzo? I love that stuff.
Years and years and years ago, my friend said the definition of 'coyote ugly' is waking up with a fat chick sleeping on your arm who is so ugly you will chew your arm off so you can sneak out without waking her up. Try explaining THAT to Koreans who ask what 'coyote ugly' means. |

You love ouzo? Crazy!
My sister got it for me when she went to Greece a while back. It took me the last month to build up enough courage just to drink it!
Unfotunately the girl wasn't Greek. Not sure I ever knew her name either! |

| I'd read the book, Altered States, and the movie came out! I was in high school and went to the Apollo Bar which had huge wallpaper showing the moonlandings by the Apollo missions (bizarre place...funky) and drank Ouzo because that was the last thing I ripped off from Dad's liquor cabinet and the first thing came to mind. Altered States reeking of licorice... |

Back when I was an exchange student to Greece ('70s), I tried ouzo for the first time. I was a bit young and foolish. My first day in Athens, I went out to lunch with two young lady exchange students, to a taverna. We ordered our food and when it came to drinks they ordered lemonades and I felt I had to try ouzo (my late brother was stationed in Greece in the '60s and told me all about it--he warned me to be careful with it, which of course went in one ear and out the other).
The waiter brought everything, including my bottle of ouzo (it was probably about 300ml--I forget, but I still have the bottle back in the States). I looked around to see what other people were doing; they would fill a glass half full of ouzo, and then fill the rest up with water--the clear liquid would turn a milky white with water. I drank the entire bottle. In the end, the two girls dragged me back to the hotel where all the exchange students were staying and dropped me on my bed; I didn't move until the next morning--I stared at the ceiling all night.
The family I stayed with had a summer house in middle Greece (on the Aegean Sea, on the peninsula south of Volos, in a village called Kalamos--I was two doors down from a place owned by one of the members of Pink Floyd). In that area, there was not just plain ouzo; there was a homemade version called tsiparo that went up to about 140 proof (some places had stronger, but not where I was). It was served in 25g bottles, along with a mandatory side dish (usually something like squid and cucumbers). Strong stuff. |

The Turks'll tell ya, drink raki instead - smoother, milder, less hangover - but they'd be lying about this.
Actually, the good stuff is Lebanese arak, distilled in copper pots over fires made from dried grape wood. Really very good!
If you want a sweeter version, try zibib from Eritrea; a gift to them from their colonial masters, the Italians. |

| Stayed with a friends family in Greece once and we had shots of ouzo with his parents at lunchtime. Don't remember anything that happened the last night I drank ouzo, total blackout. Friends pieced together some of the events and there are some photos but overall not good. The smell of it is now enough to make me queasy, bad bad bad. |

| I grew up on that stuff in Athens. Ouzo chasing with Amstel. I was way too young at the time. |

That was my mistake. I assumed the milky looking stuff everyone else was drinking was something else. I just did straight shots my first time. Did the whole bottle, too. (Objective evidence that alcohol reduces judgement.) |

Highly under-rated film, that one. Watch it once or twice a semester. Back in the olden days, I spent $70 blowing the flames off ouzo shooters at the pub and came to the next morning arse up on a creek bank, head no further than 10cm from the water. After that it became 'one of those drinks'.
Strronz! |
