Just came back from a month's vacation in Edmonton. My driver's license expired in April, and I went to the registry when I arrived to renew it.
No dice. I am no longer considered a resident. I complained that it's my permanent home, but they countered that I have no recent tax returns in Alberta (being a non-resident), no Alberta health care, and no utility bills in my name. My parents' home doesn't count for anything. I have no Korean or international license.
I rode a bicycle all month or my Korean wife-- oh, the shame!-- drove me in my dad's truck.

Good to know. I thought they would just make you take the test again. |

I had to make a choice. Keep my Sask driver's license valid and thereby keep my residency status and thereby be required to pay tax to the Canadian gov't on my Korean income...
Or
let it go and save myself a bundle on taxes.
The choice was easy, even if I have to walk a lot when I go home. |

Renewing your driver's license while you still live in Korea is one of those red flags with rev can that says you're a deemed resident. |

Not true, I renewed my licence on a trip back home and I am still considered a non-resident. Although to save on time and confusion just go swap it for a Korean drivers licence. |

True. It's one of the red flags, especially since to get your license you have to provide a residence within the province. It won't trigger an audit but if the government does come after you, it sure won't help. |

This is a pertinent thread. Apparently mine is ending next month but I certainly don't plan to live in Canada again. I guess I have to think amout getting a Korean license then, maybe see if it's possible to just get a license over here before the one I have expires and then hopefully be fine for the next few years? It seems that Korean licenses are considered valid in Canada too so it wouldn't matter for the times I go back home to visit. |

I'd do it fast Mith. They might get funky on you if they see your (well actually your card's) expiration date coming soon. |
