i was out for dinner the other day with some ex-students - kind of a reunion of sorts. I wanted to hear how they were doing in their careers and get filled in on their lives.

I also wanted them to meet my wife and of course, I was hoping to meet some of their spouses. One brought his wife and his new-born girl (3 months). Of course my wife was all over that, playing with the baby and generally being maternal - nothing odd there.

But when I touched the baby's head, it grimaced. I then remembered about how babies do not form the from of their skull for awhile and how sensitive it is.... or at least I thought.

The Koreans at the table had another suggestion for me. They (almost all of them there) told me that babies can breathe through their heads. That the "rise and fall" of that part of the scalp was actually the baby breathing.

has anyone else come accross this?

They are not unique in this.

Kimchee will cure it; it just needs to be weaned.

Well, obviously. That's why, to combat SIDS, the experts recommend placing a respirator on your baby's head before you put him/her to bed for the night. What's more, that's why babies can swim underwater for long periods of time with nothing but the top of their heads exposed. It's sort of like an infant blowhole.

No, respirators can lead to fan death.

That soft spot is the 'fontanelle' and you would have been witnessing the baby's pulse... I shudder to think what sort of info do they learn in parenting classes???

Best not to mention it, as it would likely be a soft spot.

PS - Technically, I believe it's true that babies -- and in fact all human beings -- breathe through their skulls.

And through their elbows, knees, armpits, etc.

(Though in the case of the latter, people with BO tend not to breathe so well.)

I don't know about breathing through the skull/head, but it is a fact that babies (and adults) release heat through their head, that's why baby heads are so much hotter when they are exerting themselves during feeding, for example.

Letty's head sweats like mad when she is about to fall asleep - dunno why... they all seem to be like that.

How would the anatomy work for this?

Korean students score high on science tests but their understanding of physiology, with this and fan death, is disturbing.
