So I'm in a bit of an odd spot. I've decided to take up a job with CDI, and I'm going to be leaving this weekend. But in a bit of odd timing, I just got an email from another job I applied for a while back (based in San Francisco), asking to set up an interview. To be frank, this job in SF is my dream job. I would do anything to get it. But as this is just a preliminary interview, I don't think there's much chance of them coming to a decision before the weekend.

So here's what I'm wondering. If I make it out to Korea, and I get the call a week later that this other job wants me, what would be the consequences of breaking contract and coming back to the US? Could I buy out of my contract? What would it cost me? I have a square shot at doing the job I've dreamed of since I was a kid, but it's not a sure thing, and I can't pass up the CDI thing completely just on a chance I might get it. Bird in the had worth two in the bush and all that.

CDI will always be hiring. Just postpone it for a few weeks. You can get a job here in Korea very easily.

If you do come this weekend and deceide to leave if you get a job offer in SF, dont worry too much about it becasue lots of new hires at CDI quit during training anyways!

also be very aware of the workload associated with CDI

no national holidays
strict curriculum
split shifts and Saturdays
lots of hours aside from in class teaching(marking, grading, report cards etc..you will be putting in 6 day weeks there just to get the work done)
Illegal penalty clauses in the contract

I have only heard one person say anything nice about CDI and they ended up doing a runner after 8 months

Spot on.

First, CDI ain't your dream job. I promise.

Second, CDI mass produces clones daily. If you wait a week or two weeks, you'll be able to work for CDI just the same.

Stay and interview in SF first.

They promised up and down no split shifts, but other than that, I'm quite aware. I'm not very experienced, so the strict curriculum could be a help. I'm alright with the crazy workload. No problems working hard.

I did a phone interview with the folks in San Fran. They said they need me in for a final interview if I make the cut, but that they'll let me know if I do before I ship out. If they tell me they want to fly me out to San Francisco to interview, I'll blow off CDI. If not, I can ship out with no regrets.

Thanks for the advice, folks.

You will do split shifts 2 months out of the year.

No national holidays off.

No vacation periods.

I hope you get something better.

my friend has been working at CDI for 3 months, and she just got offered a promotion to head listening instructor. she said it's a $600/month bonus, though it does involved more work, such as watching the cctv and evaluating teachers, as well as resolving any issues that the teachers or management may have.

there's a lot of prep involved, though she said it takes a lot less time now compared to when she started. do a search, CDI's not for everyone
