Could you tell me what the highlights are of going to Indonesia? I am thinking of going there.
Also, if I can't get a plane ticket to Bali, is it easy to get to Bali via Jakarta?
Thanks. |

I really loved going to Kelimutu, an extinct three cauldron volcano on Flores. Each cauldron is now a lake, with water of different colors. When I was there they were green-black, turquoise, and red-brown. They apparently change colors regularly. You get there by bus fro the village of Moni, taking a bus up at 3 am or so to catch the sunrise. It clouds over quickly in the morning in part from steam from the turquoise lake (the steam part always made me think the volcano is not so extinct!). It's a long, but beautiful hike back down to the village.
Lots of other neat stuff on Flores, like access to Rinca and Komodo islands, where you can see Komodo dragons. It's off the beaten track, but worth it. Fly in from Denpasar to either Endi (I think) or Labuhanbajo. |

Plenty of flights go to Bali. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if more flights from Korea go to Bali than Jakarta.
My girlfriend went to Bali from Jakarta last year(because of all Bali flights being booked). It ends up being a few hundred thousand won more than just going to Bali direct. |

Depends on how long you have, but if you are going to Bali you can strike out and visit East Java, including the stunning mount Bromo, which can be climbed. You could also get over to Lombok easily and see the island in a few days. Bali itself is good and cheap right now, my wife and I went there in Feb and took advantage of the post Bali bomb II discounts, getting a suite at Legian's Casa Padma for 33 bucks a night. It usually goes for around a hundred. I'd also suggest taking in Northern and Western Sumatra, with Lake Toba, Padang and Nias always a good trip, but its a hard slog. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. |

i second the mt. bromo recommendation. i did the jakarta-borobodour-bromo-bali-lombok route. with the exception of bali, everything is very cheap- spent about $700 the whole 3 weeks.
keep in mind that indonesia is HUGE- the lonely planet book for indonesia is about as big as china's. where ever you go, you'll find great things to do. bali is about as touristy as it gets, beautiful nonetheless. if you're set on going there, keep in mind that there are other places besides kuta. |

dont know wat your interests are but if you like to party i strongly suggest staying in jakarta rather than bali..........jakarta has expat districts to drink and lots more clubs especially on the weekends that stay open three days straight packed with locals n pills readily available |

i second that about Jakarta.
I also went to Bogor, Bandung, Yogjakarta and Malang.. they all had things going on.. but nowhere near the level of Jakarta for clubs and bars and such.
And yeah, Indonesia is HUGE! I spent 3-4 weeks on Java Island alone.. couldn't even make it to Bali or elsewhere. Jakarta alone consumed me for about 10 days or so. |
