I am on a long vacation, so today I got very ambitious and put together a deluxe picnic. I made fresh nectarine margaritas (cleverly grinding ice from the cooler with a hand-grinder,) and we grilled fish, with potatos and onions in foil packets. Lots of fresh fruit and veggies to munch on, and fancy cake for dessert. I even remembered to bring a bottle opener for the wine. I'm so proud of myself. A good time was had by all. I chose a spot of concrete under a bridge where a river runs by. It's a favourite spot for egrets, herons and fisherman alike. The planning, buying, lugging, bringing, cleaning, sorting etc., has me pretty exhausted, but it was a worthy project.

What did you do?

Since noon today I have been editing a paper for a journal issue I am co-editing with a friend that should come out next month. One of the purposes of our issue is to highlight research work from underrepresented contexts, and so I have been working with this Indian scholar on her paper for some time now. It looked like it was going to be in good shape and would only take me a few hours, when I discovered that she didn't know how to format in Word, and had done all of her formatting with the ENTER key and the space bar. Nine hours of work and thirty-seven pages of painstaking revision later, I have just about got it right. I'll finish it in the morning, and start on the two others I have (from Vietnam and Lebanon - revisions during wartime).

I could feel pretty Sad or Evil or Very Mad about a day like this, but I actually feel pretty good. The research she has done is good, and I feel good in supporting something like this reaching the peculiar public that reads academic research in my field.

Not as much fun as your picnic, though, Kermo.

Bought baguettes and made egg sandwiches (chopped egg, olive oil, chopped onion & garlic, and shredded lettuce) all afternoon. Just got back from the hospital on restricted diet, so it's one of the first few real foods I am allowed to eat. It was glorious. God I'm going to eat another one right now!

Spent the whole day packing.

I'm going back to my home country tomorrow night (for a vacation). At the same time, my Uni, in its infinite wisdom, decided I should move into its dorm (which they haven't finished building yet). So they told me to pack everything up and they would move it whilst I was away at home. The dorm is brand new and bigger than my current place at least..

So I packed, and packed, and packed. The kitchen is a killer because I have like a microwave, toaster oven, fridge-freezer, and a whole bunch of food to move. Plus several "Chu-Seoks" worth of soap to move so the bathroom is a hassle too. And lots of special teas, plastic boxes, cat food, cat litter and on.. and on.. and on..

That, plus like all my clothes and stuff. Plus other things like TVs and VCRs and blankets and a computer (oh wait.. that aint packed yet...), plus the laundry I washed this morning..

Now I got to pack the rest of my cat stuff up, plus clean up.. arrgh.. I shoulda been at the beach today, it was a great day.. instead I was "working". Damn. Still gotta take the cat to the "cat hotel" tomorrow as well as pack up the last of the kitchen and bathroom stuff up in the morning. And meet people for lunch at 12 then teach at 2 and 4:30 and 7:30 and meet the girlfriend and.. and.. and.. I'm so stressed. So much to do..

Speaking of which, does anyone else have a "packing album"? In the last 6 years I've packed up so many times and had to move I have a "packing album" I listen to whilst packing. Mine is Rancid's "Life Won't Wait". I listen to it on repeat whilst packing. It's like punk rock with enough chilled out (SELL OUT!) stuff that it doesn't stress me too much to listen to it whilst packing. It's not my favorite album by any means, but it somehow became my packing album a few years ago.. and has stayed.

Hmm my cat is hiding in my desk. Maybe she doesn't want to go. Tough sh..stuff...

I hate packing.

Slept in til 10. Took the day off from studying. Arsed around, had a leisurely morning with coffee, breakfast and telly. Went out late afternoon and took photos until 8. Bloody hot, but a very nice, relaxing day overall.

Spent most of the day lazing around and cleaning (only on a 1 day break). Downloaded a movie called "Kokoda", had friends around to visit, ordered in Jjimdalk and made chocolate self-saucing pudding for pudding. Then watched the movie after my friends had departed. All in all better than working.

I also spent the day at the Tool and Metallica concert.

Well worth the money (hot as heck in the crowd but worth it).

I went on an eight and a half hour hike in the mountains. It was fantastic! Am I ever going to be sore this week, though.

Had a fantastic lunch at Everest in Dongdaemun. Great northern Indian/Nepalese food. I can really recommend it. Better than any Itaewon curry restaurant I've tried. Samosa were the best I've had in Korea.

Then had a pleasant drive to shop at Costco. Not much traffic, not much people. Rare and very welcome.
