|
|
My fiance and I are both U.S. citizens, but we're planning to get married over here. Problem: Everything on the U.S. Embassy website is geared toward Americans marrying non-Americans, and we're getting conflicting information on how, exactly, an American goes about marrying an American.
Any advice or feedback from others who have dealt with the same situation would be most appreciated. |

Congrats to you both!
I'm a Canuck who married an American in Seoul. It's basically the same procedure.
Just follow these instructions off the US Embassy website. Ignore the "Requirements for Korean partner."
The Affidavit of Eligibility of Marriage and the Report and Certificate of Marriage you both need to fill out are downloadable off the website :

Proof of U.S. Citizenship, such as a Birth Certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, Naturalization Certificate or U.S. passport.
A completed Affidavit of Eligibility for Marriage. You'll need one copy (each) to be notarized by the U.S. Embassy.
A completed Report and Certificate of Marriage. You'll need three copies, two of which will be notarized by the U.S. Embassy, and one for retention at the Korean Ward Office.
Proof of identity: for example, a driver's license, military I.D., etc. (photo ID)
Proof of termination of any prior marriage(s), including an original or certified copy of a divorce decree, annulment or death certificate for your previous spouse.
If the American Citizen is under the age of 18, written permission to marry from both parents is required.
The fee for the notarizations, $90, which can be paid at the Embassy in dollars or in won, or by credit card. No personal checks please. There is no fee for military members.

Here are the steps for getting married in Korea:
Bring all of ducuments listed above for each partner to the Embassy. Be sure to complete one copy of the Affidavit of Eligibility for Marriage and three copies of the Report and Certificate of Marriage. The Embassy will check all of your documents and norarize your Affidavit of Eligibility for Marriage. The total fee for the notarizations is $90 (no charge for military members).
Take the notarized copy of the Affidavit of Eligibility for Marriage along with three copies of the completed Report and Certificate of Marriage to your local ward office (Gu Cheong;구청; follow this link for a map to the Jongno office ) for approval and signature by a Korean government official. The ward office will keep one copy of the Report and Certificate of Marriage as a permanent record.
Finally, bring the two copies of the Report and Certificate of Marriage signed at the ward office back to the Embassy for authentication. The fee for this authentication is included in the $90 mentioned above.
That's it-- Congratulations! Please keep your marriage certificate in a safe place, along with your other important documents.
Please note that the above procedures at the Embassy and the ward office can normally be accomplished in an hour or two, so please plan accordingly. We are open from 9:00 - 11:30 and 1:30 - 3:30, and we are closed Wednesdays, and American and Korean holidays.

Step 1. Both fill out Affidavit of Eligibilty of Marriage--this is to swear/have notarized at the US Embassy that each of you are free and clear to marry. Bring divorce decrees or death certificates of prior spouse if applicable.
Step 2. Fill out 3 copies of Report and Certificate of Marriage
Step 3. Bring all completed forms to US Embassy, your passports/ID's and method of payment. Take a number and wait.
Step 4. After swearing out Affidavits at Embassy, go to Jongno Gu Ward office (the easiest and closest to the US Embassy) and get married at int'l marriages desk. (Embassy staff can give you directions and there is also a map on the embassy website) Pay small fee (10-20,000 KW?). Get marriage certificate(s) signed off at Jongno Gu and bring back to US Embassy to register and authenticate your marriage. Each of you will get a final stamped copy of your Report and Certificate of Marriage (in English). These will function as your official marriage certificate.
Voila
Pick a day the embassy isn't closed and get there early so you can finish in one day. It's not very romantic because the emabssy is busy but the tellers do manage to say "congrats" in between shouting "NUMBER 37, NEXT!!!"
At Jongo Gu ward office the Korean staff will dress both of you up in hanbok and take polaroids for free if you like.

My then-boyfriend and I eloped in Nevada the week we came here. It's extremely easy. You could have a quick vacation back to the States and have some fun for a weekend. (just a thought) |

Heck, if you're gonna do that, why go to a stinkin' desert? In Hawaii, as in Nevada, you can get a license & get married the same day. |

Thanks a million. We're also having a ceremony, and part of my family is flying over for it, so we'll be *sure* to arrive early. |
