Unfortunately, the LCI Kids Club located in Apgujung has been much less desirable. The 118 hour/month contract may not seem bad for a Kindergarten/Elementary program, but the extra paperwork will surely dampen ones spirits: there are monthly lesson plans to prepare, daily schedules, work hour forms at the end of the month, report cards due every other month, and monthly tests to prepare. The school is very disorganized as the owners constantly fire Korean staff for no apparent reason. The owners have not set any kind of professional standards and have turned the school over to parents who have played a major role in firing of native teachers. Moreover, the school does not know how to take care of its teachers living conditions. The apartments are of normal size and space for a hogwon but the furniture therein is not acceptable: beds with legs that fall off, no dresser but cardboard dresser-boxes, no wardrobe (just a clothes rack), no lamps, no nightstand, faulty refridgerators, and a make-shift air-conditioning system. Furthermore, the owners have proven to be cheap and unreliable. The school only has two things going for it: its location and hours (but even the hours are debatable given other hogwon schedules); thus, the location is the only draw for such a school.
Of course, signing with any hogwon in Korea is a risky venture. No school is perfect. This teacher does believe a contract could be fullfilled at the school, but the fact remains that there are much better deals in Korea and one's quality of life may be better elsewhere. |
