I've been to a couple of church services at the church in Pyongyang where Billy Graham visited. The people seemed to be sincere, but I've read everywhere that it's a total farce put on by the government...only a show for the foreign visitors. I didn't get the sense that anything else was staged during our visits, as we were outside of Pyongyang most of the time and saw many people doing random daily tasks that weren't politically appropriate.
The second time I was there, we came into the church after the service had started. Again, the people seemed to be sincere in their actions and only paused to greet us and ntroduce the group leaders before the church. The little bit of the sermon that was explained to me afterward (by a Korean-speaking team member) came directly from the Bible with no political undertones.
Hopefully this is something that's been implemented with pure intentions. However, I'm skeptical that it's probably been done in the interest of some potential contributing group of Russian Orthodox Christians.
As an aside, do you think this belongs in the General Discussion Forum or with Current Events? |
