Was watching a movie the other day when I heard Sylvester Stallone say "F@^k! So, I started to actually listen to Mel Gibson, and all the other megastars in their movies, to what they say, rather than passively watching just their actions.
What dirty mouths!
Sly said F@^k some 15 times.
Mel Gibson, Catholic but swears like the the devil, says it into the double figures in most of his movies, too.
It's to a point now I can't let my son (five years old) watch these movies with me. He said to me, "F@^king book," about some book he had in his hands.
TV stars? What kind of role models are they? |

who says they're role models?
didn't you hear charles barkley on the commercial about 15 years ago...
"i am NOT a role model...
PARENTS should be role models."
and by the way, i know movie stars who cuss a lot in real life, but not around their children. for example, ray liotta, when he's around his daughter, he'll say "you're full of beans" instead of "you're full of sh*t." and billy bob thornton's kids are not allowed to watch rated R movies. |

Anyone who is in the public eye (their image or their speech dispersed to a wide audience) is a role model.
Of course, children's parents are primary role models. That goes without saying. |

Someone standing on a building with a loudspeaker, like U2, shouting "F@^& this and F @^% that," would be locked up as a public menace.
Yet, we ( coincidently as generally enjoy watching movies) invite these stars into our living rooms to swear and curse ...
So, from now on, (I'm a newish dad who doesn't know everything) must make headway in screening (censorsing) the movies that we allow to be viewed in the house.
So, question now: What famous movies do you know that seem at first innocuous (harmless and funny) turn out to be offensive?
As a list if you like:
1: Lethal Weapon |

When I was a kid, nobody was allowed to use 'vulgar' language of any kind in the movies (or on TV). It was noticably unreal. Things began to change by the late 60's. I was in agreement. Movie dialog began to reflect the way real people in the real world spoke. Movie violence began to look 'realistic', especially starting with 'Bonny & Clyde'. I was in agreement. It seemed an improvement over the old 'get shot, lay down quietly and die with no fuss and no blood'.
But I'm not so sure anymore if that was a positive change.
I would like to see a two-tiered approach. In movies that are honestly trying to reflect real life, then I think it's OK to talk the way people talk and actions should look as realistic as possible. An example would be a movie like "American Beauty". But most movies are not trying to be realistic in their portrayal of human life. They are only trying to be entertaining. Violence is glorified by being exaggerated. For example, people escaping from an on-rushing wall of flames. Can't happen. I think in movies of that type, where the director is being deliberately unrealistic, then the language could be restricted, in part as a way of reinforcing the distinction between the real and unreal worlds being portrayed.
I don't think it would be an undue burden. Most people abide by the standards of changing vocabulary in different situations. Teachers certainly do it everyday. I think even non-church attenders at a wedding would refrain from saying, "Oh sh*t! I forgot to turn off the air conditioner."
BTW, I doubt very much I would let my 5 year old son watch a typical Sly Stallone movie because I think the portrayal of violence is more harmful than vulgar language. |

people choose their role-models. I don't think a person's value as an artist should be related to his or her personal life or behaviour. A person is a role-model for kids when he or she is on a kid's tv show or a movie, beyond that its fare game as far as Im concerned. |

Who gives a christ about vulgar language? You can be equally rude without using one of the four four-letter words. These days I think we've gotten so used to them that they don't cause a reaction, unless it's someone important saying them. |

It's a movie - the actors are reading lines. They don't have a choice about what they say it's scripted. However if you were to follow them around all day then you be able to find out if they have a potty mouth or not.
Why are you letting a 5 year old watch these movies in the first place. It is your responsiblity to monitor what your children watch. My daughter only watches childrens shows that have been vetted by myself or my wife. When I'm watching TV and she comes into the room, I'll change the channel even if I'm enjoying the show just because I don't want her to see/hear what's going on.
I cannot think of a single mel gibson or stallone film that I would let a child under 14 watch. You need to look at your own parenting skills first. |

who ever said ACTORS were roles models?
sports stars maybe.. if your child plays sport and wants to be a sports player sure.. but what he does off the caught is nothing to admire!
mel gibson has 7 children im sure he doesnt go around swearing like he does in his movies around his kids!
what actors say in movies are scripted lines! I know some stars have words taken out of the script if they feel its to vulgar for their target audience, or producers cut them out to get a more lower rating to get more of a deverse age bracket!
but most action movies are usually rated 15 so thats means you are a teenager, and im sure you have heard the word F**K- C**T- mother -F***CKER , before if not used it a hundred times at school before!
a 5 year old childs role model should be BARNEY, or kermit the frog!
not martin riggs! or john mclaine,
sure the older the child gets he will want to be john wayne or TONY montana, what can you do..
its up to you to monitor your childs viewing, and remember 5 years from now when he/she is on the internet you will need a whole new monitoring system..
goodluck!! |

we're not living in victorian times anymore. there's tons of other more important things you can get your knickers in a knot over. |

No, he just drives drunk and then spews anti-Semitism while getting arrested. Great role model for his kids.
Sorry, I just had to add that. |

Isn't this why movies have rating and warnings on them? If a movie has swearing, it will say it on the case, or the tv channel will say that there is bad language. If it is rated 14+, don't let a 5 year old watch it. |
