This is my first time posting, although I've been reading quite a while.
I recently got a job offer for a public school in Gimpo. So there I was, running around getting all my documents ready and all that - paid to get my police record, notarizing my degree and certificates, my transcripts and bloody express courier the whole thing over. I suddenly get an email from the recruiter saying:

Quote:
The reason why I couldn't call or email you is we had a problem.

That is the school suddenly tell us that it wants hire an american teacher.
To change its intension, I called and talked with them several times.
I am still trying to.

I am so sorry about this unpleasant situation.

I will let you know later.

Hope you have a great day.

They didn't seem to have a problem with me being Australian before, so what's up with this wanting an American teacher now? What do you think of my chances for securing another job in Korea?

Funny how she sends me this ****ty email, but ends it with : "Hope you have a great day".

Mod Edit: Edited for language.

Sounds like they got lucky and got an American.

Keep looking.. there are NO shortage of jobs in the public system.

Korea plans to have a native speaker in every school by 2010... this is the middle of 2006.

They need about 10,000 more teachers for the public system alone and the hiring quotas for this term have NOT been met by either GEPIK or EPIK (short by about 250 teachers for Sept starts).

If you are interested in GEPIK you can contact them (David Nam) directly at: [email protected]

I don't have the direct contacts for EPIK or SMOE. Sorry.

Tongue-in-cheek I trust? Of course they could have gone beyond lucky and hit the jackpot with a Canadian... Wink

Don't they all dream of the american dream... or dream of actually seeing a real, live American... that isn't a figment of their immaginations?? Is there a tongue in cheek emoticon???

Everyone knows that all schools (read Hakwons) prefer a young (25ish), blond haired, blue eyed, big busted American girl-next-door type to have for their photo-ops and advertising posters.

I'm not going to let them get me down. I've been applying for other jobs - they're not the only school in Korea! Ha! I'll show them...

BTW thanks for the contact ttompatz. Sent an email to the guy already. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Yeah, a tongue-in-cheek emoticon would be good. I agree, well, as much as my limited experience can, that the Koreans tend to have an idealized image in mind regardless of skills or qualifications.

WHAT?!! Koreans only care about superficial appearances rather than substantial quality? This is news to me. I thought I was in every single photo this school has ever taken because they liked ME as a person. I just can't believe Korean (hagwons) are so shallow.

Insert several tongue-in-cheek emoticons here. Twisted Evil
