Ummm....

All the crock pots I know are electric.

Check the bottom of yours. If there is a black electrical cord coming out of it, don't (DO NOT) put the pot on the stove.

Wouldn't that defeat the whole purpose of the crock pot? As Ya-ta says, it should be electric.

Thing is, I just moved into a new furnished apartment, and the landlord has provided me solely (among other things) the pot of a crockpot contraption. Therefore, I don't have the electric cooker that goes with it.

I was wondering if the crockpot itself (sans electric cooker) can be used on top of a gas range.

If it is made with ceramic, I don't see why you can't put it on the stove?

Thanks, that's really helpful. I'll check right now, although I think I remember it being ceramic with a coating of something that makes it gleam.

Ummm. They sell cheap pots and pans at the grocery store.

Right. Because you know where I live and how the nearby grocery stores stock such items.

'Ummm.' Yeah.

Be careful putting the ceramic on too high of a heat(crock pot means slow heat) if its too high the ceramic will expand unevenly and crack.

Ok thanks for that info. I guess I'll just cut the serving size in half and avoid using the crock pot altogether.

I'd have to say don't ever use a ceramic crockpot on a gas or electric range. It's not built for that kind of a direct high-heat source (even at the lowest flame). It'll crack, then break and your dinner will be ruined and all over the stove Sad

if you use a stone plate on the burner and place the crockpot on it, it will work...as the stone plate(3/4 inch thick or more) will radiate the heat evenly.

I definitely say no. I looked it up on a crockpot company website and it says:
Quote:
Q: Can I use the stoneware on my stove top burner?

A: No. The stoneware cannot withstand the extreme direct heat and will break if placed on a stove top burner. You may use the stoneware in the microwave or oven. However, the tempered glass lid is not suitable for microwave or oven use.

There you have it. Crockpots are always heated with indirect heat. Cool
