It's a keyboard. I think I'll just copy the post I just made on the other board because that's easier and I'm still not quite used to this:

Quote:

Ha ha! I'm still getting used to the format of this keyboard but so far I love the way it feels. Check it out:

Oh yeah, that's a thing of beauty. Don't worry it has qwerty on it too. But check this out, it's so small:

That's it on the lower left compared to regular-sized keyboards.

I don't suppose anybody else has bought the Typematrix before?

looks cool, but how long did it take you to get used to not having the qwerty home row?

Getting used to Dvorak in the first place took about two months but improved my typing speed by quite a bit (at about 90 WPM now). This keyboard has the qwerty layout as well though, and here's what it looks like that way:

It only took four days to get to Korea too. $130.

I still really like the tiny Korean USB keyboard I bought. I just wish the designers of the hanja key had been a bit smarter -- how come I can't just highlight a syllable and hit the button? It's a pain to have to type it out again.

I've always been curious about the other style of keyboard, dvorak I guess you called it. I was a little annoyed when I found out Qwerty was designed to actually slow down typing since it was initiated back in the days of typewriters to keep the keys from jamming. Are there tutorials for it or do you just have to learn it on you own?

Tutorials online? There are a few like this one:

http://gigliwood.com/abcd/abcd.html

Dvorak takes about a month before you can get up to any respectable speed though and for the first few weeks it can really screw up with your qwerty typing. It makes you think for a while that you're going to forget one to learn the other but it turns out that isn't the case, it's more like when you start to learn a language and it gets screwed up with everything else but later on as it starts to gel in its own place it stops interfering with other parts of your brain.

It's more fun to learn than qwerty was when we were kids though because you can type a huge amount of real words just with the home row whereas on qwerty it's just fad sad dads fads and other gibberish. With Dvorak you can type all this just using the home row:

Quote:
Tina is on hiatus instead
The statue is sent to Santa Anita
This session is tedious on the tendons
That Thai dish is intense on the sinuses
Onions stain satin so use this Tide on this
Dan Addison detonated the thousandth headstone
Estonian nationhood is a notion hidden in Asia
The tennis enthusiast hides the dots on his hands
Otis said that sand is the seed that Isis sent us
Ted Austin insinuated that Tunisia is in Indonesia
The Dissonant in the ninth edition hits on the Saudis
I insist that Adenine is in DNA and that andesine is not
Deanna and Eddie suntanned on the Tahitian seaside oasis
Indiana and Ohio do not need donated tissues and headsets
The attendant initiated an intense sound that suited Odessa
The dodo added nine and nineteen and attained nine thousand
Duane nodded to his sis as he situated his sedan in the shade
Dennis Hudson is hidden in a distant Tunisian hashish hideout
Nina and Dana hit the astonished attendee on the head in unison
Auntie Edith tends to hint that Edna heeds the ideas due to Satan
The idea that nineteen studious Dadaists assisted Einstein is asinine

Hater Depot: are you sure you're not using the wrong ctrl key? I've never had problems highlighting a character and hitting the button to bring up a hanja.

After a day using it the verdict is: dope. I hate big keyboards.

The topic of keyboards got me bumbing around walmart at 5 in the morning last night looking for a new one. I like the ones that emulate laptop keyboards and came close to picking one up, and Walmart had couple of nice ones for around 20 bucks. I'm wondering if anyone knows if they'll work on a Mac. None of them say Mac compatible, like all the mice do and I didn't want to buy it, then try and return it. Since it's just a straight USB hook-up I don't think it will be a problem but thought I would refer to y'alls wisdom.

I don't know anything about Macs but check this out:

Quote:
According to Microsoft, versions of the Windows operating system including Windows 98 and Windows NT 3.51 and higher have shipped with support for the Dvorak layout [1]; users of earlier Windows versions must download a free update from Microsoft to use the layout.

Many operating systems based on UNIX, including OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and most GNU/Linux distributions, can be configured to use the Dvorak layout.

Apple brought new interest to the Dvorak layout with the Apple IIc, which had a mechanical switch whereby the user could switch back and forth between the QWERTY layout and the ANSI Dvorak layout. Since about 1998, beginning with Mac OS 8.6, Apple has included the Dvorak layout with Mac OS.

Yep. I just tested it. It only responds to characters as they're typed. So it must be a software problem for me, eh? Any idea how to fix it?

Before we get to that I want to make sure that you're using the right control key. You're not trying to use the one on the left, are you? Because that one doesn't bring up hanja on any keyboard. It's alway the right alt that switches between hangul and roman lettering, and the right ctrl that finds hanja for you.

If there's still a problem after that maybe we should take a closer look at your keyboard.
