The dude is whining about the potential UN force in Lebanon:
Quote: |
"First, this means creating a hostile condition between Syria and Lebanon," Assad told Dubai Television, according to excerpts released by the TV station ahead of the broadcast. "Second, it is a hostile move toward Syria and naturally it will create problems." |
Umm how??
Quote: |
"They will close their borders for all traffic in case U.N. troops will be deployed along the Lebanon-Syria border," Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja said after meeting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem in Helsinki. Finland holds the rotating presidency of the
European Union. |
Why??

I realize this is Syria we're talking about: a country that loves to present itself as much more powerful than it really is. Still, I'm not quite sure why Al-Assad is so against the possible UN force in southern lebanon.

I think it might really be as simple as "Lebanese turmoil is good for Syria" and a UN force would lessen the turmoil. Having the border between Syria and Lebanon more strictly enforced with regard to who crosses, carrying what, and paying duties and tariffs to whom (or not paying at all) is going to hit some influential Syrians in the pocketbook, I'd be willing to bet... |

Agreed. The "Syria wants back into Lebanese affairs" angle is out in the open, but perhaps not quite stressed enough as one of the deeper causes and motives behind the Israeli-Hezbollah War. |

3 great thinkers think alike.
The subject line is captivating.
The discourse delineates.
And one more arrives to seal the complexity.

Well, I think we need a funny pic to totally seal the deal... how about this one?
Perfect candidate for a "submit a funny tagline to go with this picture" contest, IMO. |
