Ok, which was the ultimate "My family/lover was murdered by an evil ruler/state and Im going to get revenge and kill a whole bunch of people with a sword" flick.

I chose these 2 cause I think they are the best ones in this genre and also because they are the only ones that actually brought a tear to my eye.

Yea, I'm not too impressed with Gibson either. Being drunk is a cop out. Let's face it, when you're loaded your true feelings tend to come out. I think he's probably an anti-Semite. After saying that, I actually voted for Braveheart. I just related to the film because my father was Scottish and I love Scotland.

Mel may be as crazy as an outhouse rat, but he's a great actor and director, and Braveheart is a MILLION times better than Gladiator.

Damn.. now had you picked the Patriot I would have voted for Gibson, but as you picked Braveheart I will have to go with Gladiator.

The Patriot is a god-awful film. Gibson's attempt to hijack yet another historical event/figure and milk the pre-existing sentiment for his material gain. He is very shrewd at choosing his subjects for this though; passion of christ, we were soldiers, braveheart, patriot.

crowe was the better hero, gladiator's cinematography was much better....
but braveheart's story was much more entertaining and compelling.

braveheart

i disliked both films very much

ugh

Gladiator had worse dialogue

Braveheart had more overdrawn scenes

Can I vote for King Arthur (2004)?

Clive Owen's character's mother was murdered by an evil ruler/state and he's going to get revenge and kill a whole bunch of people with a sword

at least I could see Keira Knightly's fiery face, Stellan Skarsgaard's awesome acting, dark atmospheric lighting .... and there was an original action scene on the ice, and it wasn't tooooooo looooong like the other two flicks

I'm starting to see a trend,...

same in King Arthur (2004).... killing the English, all saxons whether English or German, Arthur killed as a Roman officer (until near the end he changes his loyalties)

Braveheart is way better than Gladiator. Braveheart is one of my all time favorite movies, Gladiator isn't on the list. There is so much more to like about Braveheart, great, deeper story, great characters, not just the lead character. Better music. Better scenery in Braveheart. It really doesn't matter who the villain is, English or not, but the villain in this movie is really great. Has little to do with his nationality. He's a great villain. Also a great character in Robert the Bruce. There just isn't the same depth of characters in Gladiator. But if you like mindless fighting and much less of a story than Gladiator is your movie.

This movie isn't really of the same genre as mentioned, but if it is a historical drama we're talking about, Last of the Mochicans is right up there with Braveheart. Great for all the same reasons. Better than Gladiator as well.

Braveheart is a much better movie and has a much better story.
Gladiator has a silly story. "You have control of the army Maximus... they fight for you." A couple of minutes later, he's a slave in a ring. Nice story.

Clive Owen is wooden as a plank in this movie

I voted for Gladiator. Braveheart is another example of Gibson being over-emotional and ahistorical to the point of racism. if i wasnt english i would probably love it though.

True. But his supporting cast was sparkling, even the cardboard stereotypes nailed it. His band of merry men were waaaay more interesting than Mr. Wooden himself Kevin Costner had in Robin Hood.

And the hip mood of King Arthur (2004) made me wanna play some music by:

That was its saving grace in a genre i have a hard time appreciating otherwise.
