This is blockbuster genre Korean Film. It looks like Seoul's graphics gurus are obliterating Japan. It looks like Mt Fuji is erupting but it really looks like hate is the key behind Korean film success.

I'm surprised someone ELSE hasn't made this movie first. Tokyo was supposed to get THE BIG ONE at the turn of the last century, and the scale was to have matched that of the 1923 Kanto earthquake.

The Japanese are the world's biggest buyers of insurance, and if and when Tokyo falls, they will call in their policies and woe to the world financial system.

The movie is Japanese, not Korean.

Which is unfortunate. If it were Korean, I'd definitely see it.

That's a shame. If it were Korean I'd have something to complain about here.

It would be a hoot to be in the theatre with all the Koreans cheering as their arch enemy meets its end. I'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD so I can read the subtitles.

I think it would be worth going to the theater anyway!!!

I can just picture the satisfied grins on the audience's faces as the leave. Some Koreans believe that Japan could, or will, sink into the ocean one day. A few geologists showed that it could be possible. I wonder if they were Korean geologists..............?

TY for clearing that up. I apologize for the mistake. There was too much excitement in the ad. I couldn't handle it.

Lots of Japanese believe that too. The first time I heard about that was from a few Japanese friends.

I am going to see it when it comes out...

Seeing it will be subtitled in Korean i should be able to get an excellent grasp on what is going on as reading is much more of a strong point to me than listening

Should be fun

Mith, you've discussed this film before in another thread, right? I don't remember precisely what you posted there, but was it something like, "Best not to read too much into this -- it's your basic escapist disaster flick and that's about all"?

What I wonder is, do you think -- or have you read -- that it's intended to be at all metaphorical with respect to Japan today? In a sense almost all sci-fi & disaster films are metaphorical, whether it's "The Attack of the Giant Ants" (Atomic Age of the 1950s), "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers" (the height of Soviet invasion fears), or a thousand other such "oh shit! we're all doomed!!" movies.

I mean, here's Japan in 2006, going along its merry way, and suddenly OH SH*T!! LOOK!! It's an unstoppable force of nature (China)!!! Shocked And it's threatening to end life (economic prosperity) as we know it!! Crying or Very sad"

Maybe just a little metaphorical? Whether it is or it isn't, I'd say that making a movie depicting the annihilation of one's country -- and not have it be the fault of some bogeyman-foreign country -- requires not only imagination, but a degree of self-assurance and composure quite rare for this region. And understandably. If the Koreans were to make a similar film, showing the devastation of the RoK by typhoon, let's say, my money says that typhoon won't be caused by God or Nature, but by the wicked weather wizards in Washington & Tokyo.

Geology or plate tectonics have nothing to do with it, everyone knows that. Japan's going down because it was mean to the Koreans and thereby angered the Heavens. Payback's a biatch.

They should've just stuck with Godzilla. Half gorilla half whale thing, spawned from the radioactive waste of Japan... Far more intriguing than any lame old random act of nature Wink

This movie could be based on "Japan Sinks", a Japanese science fiction novel written in the 60's or earlier. I don't remember who wrote it. I read it in translation about 10 years ago.
I remember that it portrayed the West in a surprisingly good light, America and Australia accepting many of the refugees and the Japanese having to settle in other countries in a kind of diaspora. It was a pretty good book.

The meme recently seems to be that Japan wants Dokdo because of global warming, which is causing the oceans to rise and thus, Japan to shrink. Of course, ignored is that this would necessarily cause Dokdo and Korea to shrink faster. When I pointed this out, one person told me that Korea won't shrink because it is an island.

Um, anyway. I'm gonna go see this one with my girlfriend, she really wants to see it. I hope I can follow the subtitles well enough. She wants to see Train Man too. Is that one really a true story?
