This is from Friday's Chosun Ilbo:
Traditional Spirit Soju Turning Milder
Korea's traditional distilled liquor soju, known chiefly for its potency, is turning milder. Jinro, the country's largest maker of the spirit, has launched a new soju product with alcohol content of around 20 percent or 40 proof. Jinro says Chamisul Fresh targets the growing consumer appetite for milder soju.
Earlier this year, Jinro's major competitor Doosan Liquor BG took the market by storm with Cheoumcheoreom soju with alcohol content of 20 percent. Launched in February, the drink saw its market share double to 10 percent in July.
I thought this would be of interest to anyone who has bought the new product and was wondering why they weren't dancing on the tables at the end of their second bottle...and searching for their missing legs under the table by the end of their third. |

You can tell that I don't soju on a regular basis, but isn't it already at about 20%? Soon, they'll be bringing out a wellbeing version of it (for your health), which will take the market by storm. |

Yeah, I've never even paid attention to the proof. I was told it was stronger than beer but never worried about it. One bottle will get me a nice buzz, the second one will get me fairly well tanked and by the third, assuming I've paced myself properly, I'm getting tunnel vision and vomiting becomes a very real possibility. It should be mentioned that I don't do it straight, I mix about a shots worth of soju with an equal or slightly larger amount of Coke/Pepsi.
What's the proof on a normal bottle of Chamisul?

It's usually around 23-25% alchohol by volume.
Having a new 20% brand is like selling "lite" beer at 3.9% instead of the usual 5% av. |

I've been warming my pallet (sp) with it lately, and here in Canada it's 20% (or atleast the stuff at the Japanese/Korean place we go to).
Anyone tried it with Red Bull yet?

Tastes nasty.
I drink only that Chinese stuff that's 120 proof- costs 1,100 wan at Lottemart. No idea what it's called- does the job and costs next to nothing. |

Grr.....if chicks don't want to drink soju then let them drink Cafri.
Chamisul and the new one "Like the first time" or whatever it is,now just taste mildly oily.I had some with tuna the other night and I was none too happy. They've been reduced the strength of soju for 5 years now.Soon,it'll resemble sake in strength, though not in flavour.
What are the niche sojus?I know of Andong soju...which is available in traditional and commercial form, but thats all I've seen apart from a few regional variations. |
