I came to Korea the first time over 8 years ago. During that time, I would say that the cost of living has increased at least 10%. In 2000 bus rides were about 600 won, now over 850. I cannot understand why the pay for jobs seems to be the same or even lower. I just saw an add that wanted someone with a Master's degree but was only going to pay 1.9 million. What kind of fool would take such a low salary. The worst was that the overtime pay was 15,000 won an hour. I thought that the Korean government passed a law stating that the overtime wage had to be at least 50% above base pay. If you work an average of 30 hours a week a 2 million won salary would equate to be about 17,000 won an hour. Why would you take a job that pays less for overtime than you would get for normal hours. I wish employers would just start thinking about their workers a little more. In my experience if you pay better you get better employees. I still think the minimum overtime wage should be 20,000 or 25,000.
I just don't understand why teachers are tollerating the same pay as 5 years ago since the cost of living has increased. There should be a definate increase in base salary for all positions. We are education professionals not overpayed circus workers.
I wonder if anyone else feels this way. |
