Gametrailers had a segment about this topic and I thought it would be interesting to get your take on it.

Their top ten:

gametrailers wrote:

* 10. Cerebral Bore (Turok 2 & 3)
* 9. Chainsaw (Doom)
* 8. Spreadgun (Contra)
* 7. Railgun (Quake 2)
* 6. Laptop Gun (Perfect Dark Zero)
* 5. Energy Sword (Halo 2)
* 4. Ice Beam (Metroid)
* 3. BFG (Doom)
* 2. Red Turtle Shell (Mario Kart)
* 1. Gravity Gun (Half-Life 2)

While I agree they were all very cool, some others were left out.

~ The Painkiller (Painkiller)

~ Customized Dual Silverballers (Hitman: Blood Money)

~ Radioactive Dart Crossbow (HL2)

~ Razorjack (Unreal)

~ Nailgun (Q3:TA)

~ Dark Matter Gun (Q4)

~ Gas Can and Matches (Postal 2)

~ Soulcube (Doom3)

~ Flakcannon (Unreal)

~ The Redeemer (UT)

~ Gauntlet (Q3)

Any others? My add-ons are all from FPS games, but what about you RPG fans? Any cool weapons?

Let's stick to the trailers' format: No powerups or magic, but just held weapons in their default state.

aahhh... Half life?

I agree that the energy sword is way bad azz. I don't play enough video games to have a lot of opinions. But I DO think that the REd shell in mariokart was just put in their for purists or whatever.

Personal faves include the chaingun from QWTF, the Q1 super nailgun, the panzerfaust in RTCW/ET, and concussion grenades from Q3F, with the latter purely for the amount of tricks and speed you can get from goofing around with them.

jae.

I was always a big fan of the piano wire from Hitman.

How many alien infested labs, haunted World War Two German castles, or monster infested shooting galleries can you explore in one life-time? These are all boring and so are the game weapons. How about some weapons with zing. Like from American McGee's Alice, the most imaginitive 1st/3rd-person-shooter horror game ever:

  1. Playing Card Shuriken, add new meaning to the phrase "52 pickup"
  2. Croquet Mallet, club your enemy or fire croquet balls at them.
  3. Jack-in-the-Bomb/Box, either a time-delayed flamethrowing device or a wicked bomb.
  4. Jacks o' Death, while the ball bounces the jacks fly around killing the enemy.
  5. Blunderbuss, Alice's 19th Century version of a Rail Gun.

And that's just for starters.

Who couldn't like a game about an insane blood-soaked chick seeking revenge on her childhood nightmares. Her weapons are her old toys and the enemy is a horrific fairy-tale come to life. It's like Ringu meets Disney World. It's an older game, but who cares. The level design was creative; the music creepy; and the sprites and models were spectacular for the time. It's worth another look. Read About It Here.

The red turtle shell from MarioKart is gangbusters! More fun than a bucket full of rocket launchers. However, I'm partial to the "Redeemer" from UT because I kicked ass whenever I got my hands on one. Bul, you know it!

But the "Soul Cube" has got to be kickest-ass weapon. Killing sh*t gets it sexed up?! That RAWX.

Most of the others mentioned, while nifty, are simply variations on a theme.

I'd vote for the railgun.

Most devestating weapon and is probably the most difficult to use.

Agreed. Like a sniper rifle, it's only deadly in certain hands, and lacks the "spamminess" of some rocket launchers.

Oddly enough, while the railgun is a Quake creation, so is perhaps the worst spaminator; the rocket lancher in Q3 is only rivalled by the eight-shot loading UT monster. Shocked

Being chased by the Redeemer is pretty special. Wink

As are all FPS games.

@ Delirium's Brother (you know the punctuation is way wrong in your nick?! Wink )

Alice was a neat game. Neat, but not very good. It was based on the Q3 engine, so it couldn't look bad. However, the game suffrered from being too pie-in-the-sky. I also don't think gamers were ready to be a little girl in a game, no matter what wacky weapon she was wielding.

Definitely the souped up Gravity gun in HL2 which lets you rip heavy consoles off of walls, or even grab combine soldiers, and fling them at their buddies.
And the organic antlion bombs (or was that HALO?)

And that gun in FEAR, the nail gun or depleted uranium sabot gun or whatever it is- stiching a guy up and leaving him dangling against a wall.

Yeah. I think it was called "bait".

As did the crossbow from HL. They would just hang there like dolls, no matter the surface.

Worms 2!

1. Super Sheep
2. Banana Bomb
3. Holy HandGrenade
4. Mad Cow
5. Ajuma (ooooh!!)

There were so many great weapons in Worms 2. A game which can destroy friendships! Super Sheep had to be top cos of the skill involved in controlling that mutha. Honourary mention goes to the ninja-rope (not a weapon, but once mastered, was your friend for life!)
