I started going through some of my pictures tonight (to clean them up) and truly, Korean women know how to take pictures. Even the not so cute women I know look good in my pictures. The good looking ones look even better. I know they learn all the tricks while in the womb, but still...

Yeah it probably has nothing to do with the 2-hour-a-day self-photography sessions. Laughing

Ever look at ID tags of the woman serving you in Lottemart or whatever? Koreans usually look better in their ID photos than real life. That's like the complete opposite of what we experience in North America.

It may have something to do with a combination of facial topography and expected grooming (at least that's my theory). From what I understand of Korean culture one's appearance is extremely important (not that it's not really important in the US either, but you can get away with alot here).

Now here's where my theory starts sounding like light from venus being refracted off of a weather balloon at a high altitude. :D

In regard to the facial topography bit, I'm guessing that a flatter face (no offense intended to any asians out there) will create fewer shadows and more brightness. This has the effect of making one look younger as many blemishes are hidden by bright lights in photographs (find a picture of someone with horrible acne and up the brightness and contrast on the sucker until you can't see anything but a shiny moon:p). Combine that with the expected grooming habits of Koreans (which could be a generalization as well, I haven't been there yet:p) and you get a nice-to-decent haircut, a bright face, and almost no blemishes.

End venusian light-weather balloon theory.

They sure photoshop the heck out of those ID photos as well. They crank up the brightness (a good trick for making homely singers look good in music videos too) and even out the skin tone.

I had some ID photos taken at a studio, and I really didn't care how they were going to turn out. However, I was carefully groomed and posed, and when I got the pictures back, it barely looked like me. My skin was uber-white, and they had even erased a mole from my cheek. Hey! I like that mole! Leave it alone!

I just think that we (generalization) just don't care about what these pictures (ID photos) look like. Whenever I get the passport size photos taken, I really could care less how I look. It isn't going on the wall of a building, it is going to end up being a 2.5x1.5cm picture on a card. When I went with my girlfriend, she was wondering why I didn't try hard to look nicer for the photo. I just said, 'because I don't care', and she said 'cool'. It was like I was at a photoshoot, as well. Just take one damn picture and print it, I don't care how it looks. The woman took about 15 pictures and we went through to pick the best. I picked the first because I didn't care, but she said that it wasn't good enough. At home when you often need pictures for licenses and whatnot, you sit there in front of a terrible digital camera and they take one picture and that's it. If you look like an idiot, that's what is going to be on your card. I even remember us getting together to make fun of each other's photos on health cards and everything, it was funny.

Here, they tend to get all ready, lots of make-up, and wear nice clothes. Different strokes for different folks. Maybe next time I will try harder.

The photographers here will use a lot more light and photoshop away you imperfections. I'm so glad I renewed my passport in Seoul, best looking pics of me in my passport ever.

For those of you who use the 'net to meet girls,
When you're going through profiles and you see a Korean who looks super-foxy, do you mentally take her down a few pegs just to make sure your expectations aren't horribly shattered?

I see photos of my students and I hardly recognize them since I don't usually see them at such perfectly adjusted angles, in light that blasts away their blemishes, wearing finely-tuned expressions.

Oh man, that cracks me up. I always laugh seeing these girls on the subway and in restaurants taking their own pictures non-stop. I'm always thinking,"Honey, you haven't changed in the 15 seconds since you took the last picture!" Laughing

That is interesting. I think a lot of western women don't like getting their pictures taken. They usually say, no I look bad.

That's what my sister says anyway.

That's when I verbally *thok* her. Silly girl! Smile for the camera!

isn't it strange though that if you ever want to take a picture of a girl (whatever she is, friend, sister, student, girlfriend) they are almost always shy? but they will snap about 50 a day of themselves. What's the deal with that?
