Freed from a nightmare70 Asian sex slaves rescued in brothel bust
By DAVID GAMBACORTA

THE CALLOWHILL Relaxation Center needed a girl with big breasts.

No problem.

The supplier had such a girl in mind and would deliver her to the center on Ridge Avenue above Callowhill Street in Philadelphia.

The conversation last February was caught by a wiretap as part of a 15-month federal investigation into a sprawling syndicate that operated a chain of brothels from Rhode Island to North Carolina, enslaving women who paid thousands of dollars to come to the United States from Korea to seek opportunity but who wound up in a nightmare.

The federal crackdown closed dozens of brothels up and down the East Coast that operated under the guise of legitimate businesses, netted 31 arrests and freed more than 70 sex slaves.

Among the businesses closed were the Callowhill Relaxation Center and an operation called "Smile" on N. West End Boulevard in Quakertown.

Another Pennsylvania location shuttered was "Good Natural," in York, next to the Briarwood Golf Club.

The probe and arrests were announced Wednesday in New York by officials of the U.S attorney's office, Homeland Security and the FBI.

Those arrested included brothel owners and managers, middlemen who worked as transporters and otherwise assisted the organization, and individuals involved in transmitting unlicensed money, or money launderers, officials said.

The businesses pretended to be massage parlors, health spas and acupuncture clinics.

According to transcripts, investigators recorded calls to suppliers made by Myong "Debbie" Moon, 46, and Jung Lim, known as "Big Sister Miko," from the Callowhill Relaxation Center.

On Feb. 22, Debbie called the supplier and said she needed a girl with large breasts, and the supplier said he had such a girl in mind and would deliver her later that week, according to transcripts.

Debbie later told the supplier that the girl was "working out very well."

On or about Feb. 18, Big Sister Miko called the supplier to complain that one girl delivered to the center "was good, but the other not as good."

The supplier agreed to take the girl who was not so good to another location.

The extent of the local operation was disclosed in another conversation in which Big Sister said she had about 50 customers on weekdays and 60 on weekends, most of whom made appointments.

Among those arrested was Eun Ja Park, 38, said to be a manager of the Quakertown location.

At the news conference, Michael J. Garcia, U.S. Attorney for the southern district of New York, said raids on the locations "show that this exploitation is not a back-alley business.

"Human traffickers profit by turning dreams into nightmares," Garcia said. "These women sought a better life in America and found instead forced prostitution and misery."

The syndicate held the girls as sex slaves by forcing them to work off tens of thousands of dollars of debt they had accrued for phony documents and transportation to the U.S., the feds said.

Investigators said recruiters in Korea sought out women who wanted to make money to support their families. The recruiters took care of everything, supplying fake immigration documents, passports and visas, and transporting the women to the U.S.

A network of transporters drove them to brothels along the East Coast.

They were stripped of their identification and phony passports, thus cutting off any chance that they could flee the country. Besides, if they thought about running, the women were warned that they could be handed over to the police - or, worse yet, that their families in Korea could be killed.

The probe began in May 2005, when a Korean couple who owned and operated a chain of brothels in Queens tried to bribe an undercover New York police detective. They offered him at least $125,000 to look the other way, investigators said.

The couple was arrested in March along with two police officers who the feds say took the bribes. They will be tried separately on public-corruption charges.

These arrests led investigators to tap the phone of one Tae Hoon Kim, also known as Tae Won, of Flushing, an alleged middleman and transporter. It was then that the feds realized they had a multi-state operation on their hands.

The Callowhill Relaxation Center looks like any other abandoned factory building from a bygone era. More of a compound than a mere building, the center sits on Ridge Avenue and Hamilton Street, near 11th, wearing a suit of rust as it wastes away.

Drug dealers and other degenerates disappear into a foul-smelling alley behind the building to conduct their trade. Passers-by can peek into a fenced-off area behind the center and spot pieces of rotted wood and packed trashbags.

"This law-enforcement operation successfully shut down an organization that cashed in human dignity for profit and greed," said Julie L. Myers, assistant secretary of Homeland Security for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

would this be an example of Korea corrupting the morality of good, honest American citizens? Yes, yes I think it would be. Korea is responsible for all of America's Social Ills!

korea makes a mistake in thinking prostitution is as accepted in the west as it is here. For all their supposed conservatism Korea has corruption that puts the average westerner into shock.

Rolling Eyes

"slaves" eh?

Slaves who paid thousands of dollars, while in their home country, to go to the U.S....slaves who couldn't get help from anyone, including the many Korean consulates, and believed their families would be killed by some guy on the other side of the world....

"freed"....yeah instead of ARRESTED which would have happened if they hadn't thought of that whopper ahead of time...

Just because they are women doesn't mean that they're retarded and helpless.

First Koreans were up in arms (and rightly so) about the Japanese making Korean women sex slaves during the war..

Now it's Koreans making Korean women sex slaves. Will there be an uproar in Korea about this too?

Probably not. And not just because it's Koreans "victimising" Koreans, but because I'm sure a goodly number think just as RachaelRoo does.

I don't see why K-women do this. If they wanted a US visa, its not so difficult to get one. They're obviously the type to sell themselves somehow so you'd think they'd marry some American if they wanted residence that badly.

Added to that, the predicament of Koreans trapped in prostitution in America is well known in Korea.

Insightful argument Sista.

I'm as pro feminist as any educated woman, and that's why I think that women need to grow up and question what a woman claims just as much as they would question what a man says. Look at the facts.

These women live in the internet age where information and the ability to contact relatives or authorities or at least to get information is accessible to anyone. Their story is implausible. They paid thousands of dollars to 'some guy' to take them to the U.S. (which makes absolutely no sense) when they prolly just could've applied for a visa? They even had that kind of money? Why did they want to go to the U.S.? And ... there are many illegal Korean prostitues in the states.

They came to America to make money as hookers and they made up this b.s. story to get themselves out of trouble when they got caught, and thanks to the guillible p.c. liberal absurdly feminist types...they were unquestionably believed.

This article does not mention any physical evidence of slavery. If you were forced into prostitution slavery...wouldn't you try to fight? Maybe at least you'd have some bruises or other marks to show that prostitution was not your choice. Wouldn't you ...I dunno.....send an email to your family telling them to leave their home (if you really thought they'd get killed) and then maybe try to contact the Korean consulate? Maybe try to escape and run to the authorities and save all the other 'slaves' and have your captors put in jail?

I am a real feminist, and that's why I believe that genetically normal women are not this stupid and helpless. In fact, these women were smart enough to know that this implausible story would be believed because of the current p.c.-never-doubt-the-woman's-version-of-events aspect of western culture.

Another convincing and well thought through argument!

Your ability to correctly interpret and analyze facts in a logical and rational way has convinced me that I was totally wrong.

Without passing judgement on the facts in this particular case, it sure is refreshing to see this kind of acknowledgement from a woman on occasion. Too bad it's still so rare.

These women knew exactly what they were going to America to do. They knew it wasnt to be waitresses or clean hotel rooms.
However, they are probably in some sort of indentured sevitude situation.
That is the nature of the beast. No different between pimps and hos worldwide.

You're an idiot. I can think of a few less kind names for you and "real feminist" is not one of them. There are sadly too many documented cases all over the world of women being tricked into prostitution and then forcibly held against their wills. Before you start spewing your nonsense about things you clearly know nothing about, talk to people who've worked with humanitarian organizations that have worked with such women. The women who get tricked into things like this are not typically your internet savvy types who can google their questions about their prospective "employers". More often than not, the thousands of dollars you seem to think they just withdrew from their bank accounts is all they have and usually scraped together to try to improve their lives and those of the family members they left behind.

I hope you will enlighten yourself about what is going on in the real world before passing judgement on situations you know nothing about.

Of course there are incidents of women being tricked into prostitution slavery...I just don't think the evidence indicates that this is one of them. Just because it may have happened before doesn't mean it is happening every time.

Is there any evidence to support their claims that they were not voluntary prostitutes other than their word? Anything at all?

CiCI78, I noticed that your joined date is very recent. Have you actually been to Korea yet? I find it very difficult to believe that there is a person in this country above the age of three who is not internet savy at least to the point where they can use Naver. Now, back in Canada, I did know of people who couldn't use the internet for simple things.....but KOREA? No way.
