I notice the salaries are starting to go up in China. Slowly, but it they are going up on these job websites, the really good jobs are getting even better. I think in a few years Korea might really be in trouble with getting foreign teachers if they don't do something. They won't have enough Koreans who can do it, so... I had though it might take longer, but things change in China faster than I though.

ALso, have you seen a few of the jobs for China. This is still the minority of them, but some of them are really asking for credentials. It's nice to see, even if I don't qualify for half of them Wink

Salaries in China still can't compete with Korea, but I'm sure they'll continue to increase in the run-up to, and in the wake of, the Olympics. I wouldn't mind a spell in China when my contract expires in May.

Salaries suck, but cost of living is still idiot freako low. I financed an 11 day holiday and stayed in a dorm room of a hostel only 1 day of the whole trip. Slept in sleeper cars on trains, ate great meals, drank lots of beer, went on several tours. LOST MY DAMN HEARING AID AT THE GREAT FRACKING WALL OF CHINA... Flew from Bejing to Qingdao all on 900 US dollars and still came back with a wad of of chinese money. The only other outside expense was my plane ticket that I purchased before the trip that cost me 600 dollars...

So.. 1500 US dollars for 11 days in damn good motel rooms, eating great food, having a good time etc.

So yeah salaries are not great, but 5000 RMB is more than enough to live pretty damn fly for a white guy.

I got a job offer there that seems decent

-- 15 hours a week/ 3 days a week/ 5000rmb a month.

To top it all off- doing part-time work is legal over there and there are jobs that pay between 150 to 200 an hour (which is $18 to $25 an hour)!

So, if I were to take this job and still do about 10 hours part time work a week, I would make about 9,000 to 10,000 a month (which comes to roughly $1200 a month) with a free apartment and free transportation.

And yeah, it is horrendously cheap to the point that you can spend about $200 to $400 (modest estimates at best) and still pocket $800 to $1000 every month, which is about the same as what many people would save in Korea.

exactly. I spent about 3000 RMB a month while there (not living frugally, but not being a big spender either). In Beijing or Shanghai, I would put that up some, especially if you go out a lot (nightlife).
