It depends on your VISA STATUS. This does NOT apply to F!, F2, F4 holders.
For most of us it is NOT legal, but if you are having a "friendship" and enjoying a "cultural and language exchange" then it will usually fly under the radar.
Do remember however than the onus to prove your innocence is on you and the burden of proof is NOT on immigration. You're not in Kansas anymore Toto.
If you get busted for someone simply alleging that you were tutoring, you will face the consequences. |

| It's not legal to volunteer?? That seems wacky... does anyone know the reason for this? Is it just to prevent people from giving "free" English lessons to people while getting paid under the table, or what? I've been wanting to volunteer at an orphanage or something while I'm here... drat! |

Technically it is NOT allowed under your status of sojourn but if you have an orphanage or other similar situation that you want to work with it is no problem to get it added to your ARC and made legal.
Just a simple trip to the immigration office with their registration and permission from your boss
Or you can do it illegally if you want to chance it - I have never heard of an immigration raid at an orphage yet. |

Not legal to teach for free. Seems funny, but I get it.
They don't want people to "pretend" they're teaching from free, so any kind of side work is illegal. Interesting. |

It is ILLEGAL to do anything that is NOT permitted in your status of sojourn.
That includes volunteer work outside your place of employment.
Did you think you were still in Kansas there toto?

Um, yes. Your visa does not allow it. And guess what, in a foreign country you are not allowed to do things your visa does not allow you to do. Really, is that a difficult concept? |

| The volunteering ban exists in several countries that I've taught in. I guess it's because there is a narrow margain between 'employment' and 'offering your services.' Also, teaching English for free is theoretically taking potential employment from a qualified worker, thus affecting unemployment rates of your host country. |

basically, nobody let you in this country to volunteer or save the place. You are here as an English teacher, thats all you are allowed to do. |

Got it from the horses mouth; an immigration officer told me that even if you're talking to your Korean friend in a coffee shop it can considered illegal.
And in Korea there is no "innocent until proven guilty" concept. You are "guilty until proven guilty". |

Ahh the joy of an E2. Immglad I have a visa that allows me to tell an immigration officer to eff off. cant wait to use that privilidge. |
