I'm over 40, a teacher who just signed for 6 months at 2.0 million is African American, and the school just hired a Brit. When I did a Google search on the school, I found it on the resume of a New Zealander. Is this an ECC phenomenon, an ECC Eunpyung phenomenon, or has Korea changed that much since I was here 4 years ago?

It might just be me - but I am not quite sure what your question is.

Is there prejudice in Korea based on color, age, sex, accent, etc?

Yes.

Is it better than it was four or even ten years ago? Yes.

Are you saying that you're getting paid less than whites? Sorry, but I don't quite understand your question / point either.

No, I doubt Korea has changed much in four years, but it is possible for individuals to change Koreans' impressions.

Geez, even after three bottles of soju I still couldn't figure out what the OP was asking. Sure is funny reading these boards however. Better than Saturday Night Live because most of these people are not even trying to be funny. That's the funniest part.

Are you surprised you're earning 2.0m?
Are you surprised they hired a Kiwi?
Are you surprised they hired a Brit?
Are you surprised they hired people who probably weren't black in the past?
Are you surprised they hired a black person a kiwi AND a brit?
Are you surprised you got a 6 month contract?
Are you surprised they hired someone over 40?
Did you come here 4 years ago and fail to get a job for being black?
4 years ago did you come here and meet brits and kiwis who failed to get jobs because they were brits or kiwis?
4 years ago did you come here and fail to get a job because you were over 40?

Whats the question/topic?

If it's one I haven't covered I apologize =)

The last/only time I worked in a hagwan two of the teachers were black south africans, one was a white south african, one was another brit and the previous teacher was another black south african. They all earned 1.9-2.3 depending how long they'd been there. One got a 6 month contract when they asked for an extension (rest got 1yr extensions or left). That was 2 years ago.

I'm white, I make 1.9 million, and I have a one year contract. Yes, I experienced, saw, and read about a lot of discrimmination the last time I was here. I'm not sure if I should be surprised at what I see at this school. That's why I asked, "Is this an ECC phenomenon, is this an ECC Eunpyung phenomenon, or has Korea changed that much in the last 4 years?"

Um, you do understand why we're all a bit confused, right? Are there white African-Americans?

Now I get it!

I think he is commenting on the wide variety of Native English speakers there are teaching in Korea now?

One thing I have noticed is that there are more and more Brits here than when I first came to Korea in 2002. It's really nice.

simply a matter of supply and demand.

There are NOT enough pretty white Americans willing to come here. Next option is work your way down the list.

Demand is for 20,000 legal teachers.
Supply is 1/2 that.

They (hakwons) prefer legal teachers but will take anything rather than lose their investment. They will take any warm body that is a "native speaker" cause a foreign language hakwon with NO native speaker is soon closed.

This is NOT a matter of reduced discrimination. It is simply a matter of economics.

Working your way down the list eh? Are you insinuating that Brits are somewhere at the bottom Wink?

No, but I would suggest that if the school had a choice between a blond haired American 20 something girl and anyone else... guess who gets picked.

Next in line is the American dude.

Now everyone else falls somewhere farther down the preference list.

How many times have you seen ads with a "preference for females" and/or "North Americans prefered."

And when the dust settles out... anyone (as long as they look like a foreigner and still have a pulse) is prefered over no-one.

Welcome to ESL in Korea.
