Tiger Airways has flights from Singapore to Darwin. Only 4 1/2 hours away.. is it worth it for about two days (I wouldn't have much more time than that).
Has anyone been there? Where is a good place to stay? What is there to do? Should I add Darwin to my travel trips.. even if 2 days is all I'd have to give to it?
Share some Darwin info if you got it..!! |

There's not that much to do in Darwin itself. But it's close to the Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, both of which are beautiful. take a visit to Katherine gorge too. All are within 3 to 4 hours of Darwin. |

WOW, just noticed you said 2 days!!! Wouldn't be worth going to for such a short time in my opinion. Up to you though!!! |

Yeah, might not be worth it with the time constraints.
But from Singapore, there are flights for about 100 Singapore dollars roundtrip.. (which is about US$60, I believe)..
Its almost tempting for that factor alone.. but yeah, once in Darwin.. then what?
I'd probably enjoy Singapore more (a city I already like).. but Darwin is Australia.. and I'd love to step on Australian soil just for that sake alone.
Flight times are lousy though. I'd arrive on a Thursday at 2:35am in the morning.. and I'd be leaving on a Saturday at 3:15am in the morning!!??!! (if i were to do this).
Probably not worth it.. but the price is right.. and it would be Australia. Those two strange middle of the night arrival and departure flights are disturbing however.. particularly if I could only do it for two days maximum anyways |

If it's only 60 dollars round trip, i say go for it!! Might as well, right!! Find some backpackers/locals up for a few beers and you are good to go. |

Booked it.
It bumped up an additional final total of US$220 because of taxes. Worth it though.
Seems like beaches are the main activity? The town looks nearly surrounded by water on 3 sides.. is the downtown interesting?
Anyone have any recommendations for anything?
I'll be flying in in about a week from now. |

Another reason why you're more of a tourist than a traveller (see other thread).

Almost perfect times IMO.
Ideally I like to arrive just before dawn (5 am) and depart at night (12-1 am) to not only maximize the days and minimize hotel rooms (you only need one night's accommodation, and thus can splurge on a comfy room) but also to see a new place as the sun comes up, and say goodbye to it when the sun sets (followed by dinner and drinks and good farewell conversation).
I hear the best part of Darwin is the journey, which these days is by train.
The next best part of Darwin is the national parks around it, Kakadu and Litchfield.
So perhaps when you get to Darwin you can grab an early breakfast at an all-night diner, see the sunrise, walk around, chat, then by midmorning Get Outta Town!
Have fun whatever. (Gotta be better than Honolulu ) |

No chance of seeing a koala in Darwin (unless someone's set up a petting zoo) Kangaroos should be everywhere...
Darwin downtown is briefly interesting, but you can get around it pretty quickly - there's a croc farm you could check out, indigenous culture tours and there used to be moonlight markets.
My advice is to get out of the city - take a daytrip to Litchfield, croc free for swimming - Kakadu is bigger and better, but further away.
Wear shorts, drink heavily - you'll fit right in. Enjoy.

NOOOOO!!!!
Swimming can be a hazardous way to keep cool in Darwin (perverse considering it's Australia's hottest city).
A) Crocodiles! Saltwater and Freshwater (the salties are the killers).
B) Sharks!! As if crocs weren't enough.
C) Box Jellyfish! Long tentacles, painful stings, potentially deadly.
Stick to the hotel pools, or inland rivers.
