I am working on a sound piece for an art show back in Los Angeles(www.soundwalk.org) and I have a technical question about cell phones. Bascially the project is a real-time sound peice where a listener back in LA can hear Seoul. That includes, buses, walking, talking, birds etc.....
Basically I want to turn my cell phone into a microphone to pick up sounds long-range. Perhaps with an omni-directional mic? I found one source which stated that all cell phones could do this.

However, according to my engineering friend this is not possible. Anyhow I know cell phones do pick up some amibent sound, but not enough to accompish my goal. I am off to Yongsan to take a look around. If anyone has a good idea and it works let me know!
If you are wondering who I am and what I am about check out my webpage for my last sound project (slient project)
