My friends have been going to this since I believe 1999... every year. they say it's that great, and have been asking me to join them since then, but I don't have that much free time where I can go to the middle of nowhere for a week and walk around naked and be around thousands of drug users... but I will someday. |

At one time you had to be some kind of a performer or artist or performance artist to go. There are or were no spectators allowed at Burning Man, everyone had to participate with some kind of performance for the crowd. Burning Man has always been a kind of action collective. Nobody is allowed to sit on the side-lines. Has this changed recently? Or do you all have something up your sleeve that you are going to do once you get there? I've always wanted to go too, but could never figure out what kind of performance/art to bring or do. |

2 participants stand out from an article I once read about Burning Man. A Canadian duo called "Juicy Danger" who juggled running chainsaws amongst other things. They have a video out "Juicy Danger meets Burning Man."
The other was this guy who built this big static electricity generator on top of a truck. He'd stand next to it and wear this special suit and when enough electricity had built up he'd get zapped. Looked like lightning and looked like fun! Great night time photos of that too.
After reading the article I remember thinking "I've gotta go to one of these." It's a big giant lunatic rave in the middle of the desert.
Edit: Dr Megavolt, yeah! http://www.drmegavolt.com/index_gallery.html
Here's some pics from the 1997 Burning Man. It's gotten a lot bigger and hairier since then.

I have no problem with this. In fact I think it is a great concept.
I believe the definition of a performer/artist is a fairly flexible one and I doubt it would exclude anyone who was prepared to make an effort.
Personally, I would most likely attempt to implement an installation, an outdoor set, or get involved in a sound system. |
