Anyone know the fine print?
I support the concept but not the idea of shelling out $50 bucks when I might not even take the job! Who's keeping the records, the same people that need a new copy of my diploma every time I fart?

Seriously, anyone know a way of getting this done on the cheap from here?

What are you talking about? Have you been asked to do this?

I have been ask to suppy a criminal record check for a public school job. I am using the FBI proceedure. It will cost $18 usd + some running around, and I will have to have a family member forward it to me from the States.

Thanks for the info, I apparently have to go to the Seoul police to certify that I've been a good boy, maybe they can hook me up with fingerprints.

Contact the police station nearest your home, in your home country. They might be able to set you up for free. I had to do this once for a job in Spain, but I was home at the time. I just went to the station and asked. They looked me up and wrote up a short statement that I had no record. That was it. Knowing how things work here, though, the Koreans will want something specific, stamped, sealed with fairy dust, etc.

Maybe someone else on the board can give you better info.

I had the hardest time with this. My po-dunk hometown said they would not give me one because I am currently not living there (???!), so then I went to the nearest larger city that I lived in previous to that, they refused to give me one unless I showed up in person with ID, as they explained to my folks that, "how do we know this is really him asking(???!), besides, we have never heard of a thing like this, and if it's one of those fingerprint checks (their words), definately have to do that in person." They refused to take fingerprints done in Korea and sent via FedEx. Luckily I found a school that didn't require it, or else it would cost me a round-trip plane ticket to the States at my own expense. I will get a stack of these done when I go home for vacation over Christmas though...sheesh.

The FBI route might be the best method in the end, but didn't even know it as an option at the time, as the schools kept saying, "from your local police dept."

I had to do a criminal background check on myself for my recruiter prior to coming to Korea. I did an online search and found a site offering this service for $30. Paid with a credit card, printed the results (negative), and sent them to the recruiter. This was acceptable to them.
I would recommend this procedure to anyone needing a background check.

In Canada (Calgary) I had to do it in person. I think it was about $20.

I would think they would want to do it themselves so you know you didn't make it up or alter it. But sometimes things don't make sense. -Jeff

Just for giggles I sent this email to [email protected] which was listed on the site. -Jeff

I was looking at your criminal background check requirement. I'm sure this seems like a silly question. Do you want me to print my own background check on my own computer? Usually in the US the hiring company does the background check otherwise a bad person could fake the background check. We are talking about criminals. -Jeff

Thats true....

A very enterprising person can simply find a sample of a police background check form on th net, make one up themselves on their computer and then go to a stamp maker's shop to have a stamp made...foolproof, right? it sounds like Korean proof to me.... Wink

And yes, in the U.S., the hiring company conducts the background check, not the individual.....

Keep that in mind Very Happy

You missed something. The site ( http://www.atcjob.com/seekers/gepik.php ) says they will take a printout from an online service. That means no stamp needed. You just need a sample of kind of file they download to your computer. -Jeff
