| After viewing perhaps 100 photos of contemporary Iranians, I've noticed they don't like neckties. They like the leisure suit atmosphere. Even the president Ahabibijabman. They are all "cas". Do neckties offend Islam? |

Wikipedia says ties are decadent, un-Islamic, and a symbol of the oppressive West
| Quote: |
At the time of the Iranian Islamic Revolution, the Islamic fundamentalist hardliners of the revolution were called by the mainstream U.S. press "turbans", and the modernist moderates were called "neckties". Ties have been denounced in Iran as decadent, un-Islamic, and a symbol of the oppressive West. Since then, most Iranian men have worn long-sleeved shirts with collars but no ties.

| None of the teachers at my school wear ties. Neither do I. |

I have a photo on my office door from the Korea Times earlier this spring of a long line of Korean men wearing casual shirts and no ties. (They all seemed to be holding a jacket over their arms.) The photo was part of some government propaganda to discourage wearing jackets and ties in offices for the purpose of staying comfortable naturally instead of having to turn the air conditioning up so much to stay comfortable. Something to do with energy conservation.
Public-spirited type that I am, I've been doing my part to help the government achieve these goals.
(And I don't like wearing ties anyway. Cuts off the blood supply to the brain and makes one stupid, don'tcha know. 'Course Bush is the same it seems with or without a tie. ) |

| Might be a middle eastern thing. The majority of Israeli's don't wear ties either, in an office environment... |

It seems Iranians don't care to be liked by the West. Thats fine, that their deal, that whats they're into. However, untrimmed beards, foppy hair, bad suits etc plays into the "wild unshaven Muslim stereotype". That and Pakistani pajama shirts. The Sauds don't have a problem with ties or even well tailored suits. The colorful Moo-moo's worn by African Muslims make them look happy becuase fat people wear moo-moos and fat people are jolly.

We have plenty of time and bombs we do however lack the manliness to use the bombs. |

I wonder if it's because the tie may, in their belief system, remind them of the Christian cross.
My CELTA trainer back home had taught in one of the Gulf States and during his writing classes had noticed that the students weren't crossing their "ts". When he asked why they said it resembled a cross and that's why they were not thrilled to do it! |

Well that tears it! From now on I'm refusing to write the letter "c" because it resembles the crescent. |

As I know it, ties started from rags in the Napoleonic era that soldiers would wear to wipe off sweat and grime without troubling themselves with pockets.
From there, they grew into the pointless, useless, modern nuisances that they are.
Speaking of modern nuisances, Duluoz, how do you like ties? |

| I'm neutral but I'm aware they can make me look better when it matters so I have a few nice ones that are artfully created. |

Well, ties are certainly oppressive. The fact that one can be judged negatively for wearing one or not is nothing else but that. |
