Yesterday I went with my EX to get myself a cell phone, after shopping around and not finding any deals on phones i liked i settled on a ludicriously expensive one with an english menu and lots of stupid functions.

Anyway, after some questions i find out i can't even get the KTF discount card in my name or even use it! No foreigners can apparently. So then it comes time for my payment, i'm getting it spead out over the year, but when i give him my mastercard, he's like, no we can't do that it's not Korean! But he then goes and takes down my brand new korean bank acc. info knowing full well there is no $ in it yet!

Just an funny little quip i though i'd share, wondering if others have experinced similar situations~ Wink

Wait a minute...you're telling me there's something you can't do just because you're a foreigner? In Korea? I don't believe it... Wink

If I already own a GSM phone (tri-band), how difficult would it be to get new service?

What kind of service structure do they have in Korea? Do they have the same kind of annoying contracts that they have in the US, etc, or do they work completely off of a pre-paid system?

You know who is so great at helping with phones?

She works at KTF just down from Burger King and Gecko's in Itaewon. She speaks excellent English and is knowledgable in all cell phone affairs.

I give her thumbs up!

Think more in line with how residential phone service is done in North America.

Thinker's right - it's a major annoyance that MOST phone people deny cell phone services that are available to any Korean. The refusal to provide a KTF card to a foreigner without a massive deposit is most maddening - so I use my wife's when I need to. Yes, I'm aware it's because so many foreigners have fled the country without paying bills.

If you do manage to score a KTF card, be sure to take advantage of the free KTF lounge at Incheon airport. Free internet, free beer...

Please pardon my complete ignorance on this, but what is KTF and what benefits does one receive with a KTF discount card?
