There are some changes that are being considered in terms of the forums on Dave's ESL having to do with blacklisting of schools.
These changes are being pushed by a couple of mods even though most of the others disagree with the suggestions being made. If those pushing the idea are successful, their plan will require anyone that blacklists a school on Dave's ESL to provide contact information of the school. In turn, the school is contacted and asked to reply. If the person does not provide the information, then their post is deleted. |
Some information I obtained.....what do people think?
Should this happen?
Is it a good idea?
Would schools actaully bother to reply?
I personally have no qualms about posting the contact info for the school.........ALTHOUGH........the legal grounds of this is quite shaky...the laws in Korea are quite strict when dealing with libel. And Daves could be sued or shut down if some school was to take this to heart and pursue it legally(perhaps one of the chains...W...for example)
While allowing schools to have their say is a decent idea, I imagine it would go similar to the discussion? that was had with a certain recruiting company on Daves earlier.
Threats, condemnation, insults, followed by apologies, more demands for the removal of the schools/companies name, apologies and yet more insults and threats....its the Korean way
There are enough blacklist sites out there for people to send their info to.....since Daves is certainly a central forum for people in Asia it would be nice to be able to access a blacklist that could be more accurate.
On the flip side this is an open forum and people should be able to come on here and rant.....if businesses care enough to see what is going on then they can come on here and defend themselves.
There was that post earlier where a teacher came on and thrashed the school she was working at(had just quit/been fired) and another teacher came on to defend the school......so the opportunity for such a defense is there! |

Leave the black/gray/white lists to the sites that are dedicated to that.
It is a direct conflict of interest for this board (because it takes money from recruiters and schools).
I would seriously doubt the validity/integrity of any board that takes money selling ads on one hand and then runs a blacklist with the other.
Speaking directly to that subject, there was another blacklist site a while back that DID contact blacklisted schools and attempted to coerce then to pay money to remove them from said list.
Nope.... BAD idea...
Too much room for abuse from both sides. You mentioned the schools going after this BBS. How about a bad school that gets removed from the list and is promoted here. There are liability issues for the board on that side too. Teacher sues because the board removed the blacklist post and promoted the school. Teacher goes to said school and gets shafted.
Still a bad idea... no win from the boards point of view. |

I can see advantages and disadvantages to doing so, but since this site is sponsored by schools' ads I can see their point. It's not that hard to use other sites to blacklist bad schools, like I did with my old school. Offtering the schools a chance to respond is a great idea, however. |
