I'm heading back home next week and I promised a korean coworker that I'd make her a cd of Canadian music before I go. This is not supposed to be representative of the country or anything like that but I want it to be a cd of good music. I know that is very subjective, and ultimately I'll decide on what goes on the disc but I'd appreciate it if you'd give me some suggestions on what you think are good Canadian songs. The bigger the pool I have to choose from, the better the selections.
This is what I came up with so far:
The Hip - Wheat Kings/New Orleans is Sinking
Neil Young - RITFW/Powderfinger/helpless/after the goldrush
Joel Plaskett - True Patriot Love/Oh my soul
The Band - Dixie/Up on Cripple Creek/Makes No Difference
Rheostatics - Shack in the Cornfields/Easy To Be With You/Saskatchewan
Arcade Fire - power out/wake up
Joni mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi/carey
Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown
Blue Rodeo - 5 Days in May
Cowboy Junkies - Misguided Angel
sloan - Underwhelmed/bells on
sarah Mclachlan - path of thorns
bare naked ladies - lovers in a dangerous time (yes, its' better than Bruce's version and you know it)
rush - closer to the heart
hayden - dynamite walls
eric's trip - Behind the Garage
spirit of the west - home for a rest
5440 - i go blind
sarah harmer - escarpment blues |

I love Canadian music, but most of the stuff I'd name would probably send your average Korean to hide under their desk.
I will however add a couple:
Age of Electric - Ugly
Headstones - Unsound
If you can get the Hard Core Logo soundtrack, there are a lot of great tracks on there by some of the musicians you already listed. |

| Rush is fantastic. I don't know how you could just pick one song out that lot of greats. Joni Mitchell, too. And Neil Young. |

| Drop Joni Mitchell altogether (she's just annoying) and add "Stupid Girl" and "Down By the River" (Neil Young). |

Joni Mitchell is less annoying than people who think she's annoying by far! But I would say she has a big nose. This big nose doesn't make her beautiful (horse faced) but acts as a resonating cavity for her fantastic voice. Her later albums are sort of annoying. But her first work, when she was young, man, that stuff is incomparably, suberbly so beyond annoying it's the antithesis of annoying (many exclamation marks here....).
I'd say Neil Young, if the two (Joni Mitchell and Neil Young) are compared, is the more annoying of the two. Singing in a whiney tremolo about various Never Never Lands. So homely- poignant, hillybilly funky cool....achingly moral (like Bruce Dern in the SF movie 'Silent Running) and high pitched hippie. If I had to say either is 'annoying' (like .0007 % 'annoying').
What's annoying about Joni Mitchell? Her big nose? (you're 'looking a gift horse in the mouth' here...). Lawrd, man, you don't have to marry her honkin' nose...

Canadian women from Vancouver Island rock the world with music they perform AND write themselves:
Nelly Furtado's acceptance speech when winning the Grammy for Best female pop vocal performance:

From Nanaimo to a place among the all-time jazz vocal greats, Diana Krall writes and performs world renowned music:
And then there's the other great Canadian female vocal artist (performer AND writer) of the decade, and her five-time Grammy nominated:

I did a tour through Joni Mitchell's career via youtube just a few nights ago. Wonderful. Started with an appearance on Johnny Cash's program, she was like 14 & sang a solo & did a duet with him (she was "Joni Andrews" at that point) & ended up with a recent full orchestra-backed version of "Both Sides Now." She's a genius.
Now Warner Bros seems to have yanked everything bearing her name off youtube. Disappointing. |

VanIslander, you're out.
If we're allowed to be more eclectic, I have plenty more to suggest.
William Shatner - Common People
Stompin' Tom - Bud the Spud (seriously, HOW could you forget?)
Sandbox - Curious (featuring Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys)
Gordon Lightfoot - Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (or look up the Angels Saints & Heroes cover if you're a risk-taker)
Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana - Osain
Puentes Brothers - it's all pretty well the same
Operators 780 - Four Ways
Wednesday Night Heroes - Music for the People
Bobby Curtola - Makin' Love
Datsons (not Datsuns) - I am the Eye |

Well, here's my recommendation:
Be Good Tanyas: Lakes of Pontchartrain (download) or The Littlest Birds (download).
Incredible songs. Anyone who enjoys good music, feel free to d/l them.
