i think i need a break from here - it's become a dangerous place to tread

I can see VI's point. Sometimes grammar mistakes really get to me, while other times I just let them slide.
I recently read somewhere that foreign teachers in Korea have scored an average of 718 on the TOEIC test. Considering that a lot of Korean companies require 800+ for their Korean employees, what does this say about teachers??
Have YOU ever taken the TOEIC test? What was your score? (Guess I'm hijacking this thread!!) |

Ha! Ajuma, I have, and I got a 960 (which was still horrible since one of my students got a 980 and never let me live it down). The other teacher who did it with me (we took it because we were teaching a TOEIC course at AEON and wanted to know what it was like) got a 950. 718, the average... You have some faulty information. Have you ever taken the TOEIC, and for the love of god don't tell me you got a 718!!! |

Are you sure you read about foreign teachers? Perhaps, you read about Korean teachers.
Teachers' low test scores defended by ministry
Low scores by more than 270 middle and high school teachers on the Test of English for International Communication do not reflect their ability to teach English, officials of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, and an independent English education expert said yesterday. Given the relatively poor test scores, government officials said they would take steps to improve the skills of English teachers in the country but said that actual teaching skills rather than test outcomes were the most important aspects of teaching.
The government was reacting to statements from Grand National Party lawmaker Lee Ju-ho who pointed yesterday to an average TOEIC score of 718 by 272 middle and high school teachers. That figure was below the average score of 841 for new employees of 12 public companies on exams in the first half of this year.

More Teachers Give English Class in Korean
A lack of English proficiency among teachers has also made them conduct classes more in Korean than in English.... The survey said the ratio of those using Korean only in English classes rose to 12.9 percent last year from 10.7 percent in 2004 and 9 percent in 2003. The 2002 figure was 9.5 percent.

| It's probably worth noting that TOEIC isn't so much as a proficiency test as an affront to the very notion of validity in language testing. |

Are you sure you read about foreign teachers? Perhaps, you read about Korean teachers.

RR, you may be right...although I would be curious to find out what the average score really is!
And yes laogaiguk, I took the TOEIC test some years ago...got a 990! 
Since they've recently changed the format, the next time they offer the test at my school, I plan to take it again. You're right. It DOES help a lot to know what your students will really be facing. |

The TOEIC sucks anyways, but, especially after RR's post, I think you were definitely talking about Korean teachers. I am sure the average score would be between 900 and 990, some of it due to actually not knowing the answer, the answer being archaic (sp?) which tends to happen or people who are just not good at tests. Actually, those latter 2 reasons are another good reason it sucks to determine English level.
Also, it is curved (I am not sure how though, but I know it depends on all the marks that come in) which means your score 1 day ago could be different if the group of people taking the test that next day is different. Atleast they have added a speaking section, but it is not really useful. |

I wonder if 'competent' is transliterated from the Korean word for 'girls who don't talk back to their male superiors.'
Just so I have this straight, no males/perverts and now no girls who question or talk back to males. Hmm...that narrows the field to....transgenders? What about if I surgically removed all sexual-related organs in my body and took estrogen injections to counteract my male urges and provided a notarized doctor's note verifying these facts (notarized by a Korean embassy, of course), could I get 3.0? |

Probably.
In fairness, the TOEIC is a business-oriented English exam, and teachers shouldn't be faulted too harshly for doing poorly on it, although I'm not sure what test they would do well on!
