If you had a plane ticket to Africa.. where would you go?

For me.. i'd be most interested in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania. To a lesser extent, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Namibia. Senegal also seems intriguing.

This depends a bit on how much money you have.

Lots of money - try Okavango Delta in Botswana (a mokoro tour - you may have to fly in on a small plane) coupled with the Chobe National Park (also in Botswana) - then head over to Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe - then up to Victoria Falls. Have your own vehicle for Chobe, Hwange, and Vic Falls. The qualitative difference if you have your own wheels will be 100% or more.

If you go to Zim - e-mail me or send a PM about how to - uh . . . make your money go MUCH further.

The above, you will find is expensive. I lived in the area for two years - so it was cheap for me when I was there (89-91).

Less expensive - but still not cheap by any means - would be Tanzania - the Serengeti National Park and perhaps Ngorongoro National Park.

DON'T join a group safari - hire your own driver and vehicle for only about 25-40% more and you can go where you want - when you want - and SEE what you want. Group "safaris" spend far too much time with toilet breaks, smoking breaks, and taking photos of monkeys - when you could be tracking leopards, lions, cheetahs, and other much more exciting animals.

Go during the "dry" season when animals must congregate near the water holes. During wet season animals will be much more spread out - and some will be difficult to track or locate.

I've been to Eritrea and would recommend it, as you know, TB. But unfortunately it has become much much harder to get there in the last few years. I still want to get to Ethiopia to see the old churches there and possibly visit one of the monasteries that you have to climb up ropes to enter.

I have a friend who has been to Madagascar and told great stories about it, so it holds a special fascination for me. I also love Malagasy guitar music, so that would be a treat in going there.

I have another friend who also speaks highly of Mali and Burkina Faso as great places to travel, again with great music.

Of... so many other places: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal... friends have lived in all of them and said good things about them. It all makes you want to go.

I saw 1,120,000 won to Naroibi through Hong Kong and Johannesburg through Xanada Travel. Tempting! I'm sure a South Africa stopover could be arranged.

I've been looking at Kilimanjaro - 5 days.. sounds like its around $750 with all the park fees and such. Definetely achievable to hike to the top.

Serengeti would be a must. Sounds like $100/day from what I gather.. maybe three days would be good. Three full days.

Ethiopia would be fascinating for the culture.. haven't heard many good things about Addis Ababa.. but I'd still love to see it anyways. Eritrea/Asmara for the less chaotic more civil version of it! Although that might be tough if its getting tougher to visit there!

Naroibi would be a must. As would Dar As Salaam or possibly even Zanzibar - its so close. No idea what those cities would be like.. but Zanzibar would be interesting - the name alone - although probably extremely touristy.

Anywhere but Itaewon. Laughing

But seriously

1) Botswana - got accepted to a two-year volunteer service assignment there in university but got cold feet, over a woman.

2) Tanzania - was determined to climb Kilimanjaro someday

3) Angola - have been fascinated by my recent reading of its history and main port city Luanda:

If you do decide some day to do a safari I would recommend that you try to find an African owned company. When I went (many years ago now) the famous European companies (Abercrombie? etc) were charging at least double what the African companies were.
As for places to go, I loved Uganda. I found in my African travels that the best places were the places without other whites. Try to meet some Africans. As they are generally pretty friendly and open it is easy to do.

Yes, it's a country in chaos but that would be interesting in itself. The main reason would be because I have a good friend who lives there, whom I met in Canada while going to school. I would love to stay with her for a few months, work on her brother's ostrich farm and get the real African experience, instead of the tourist thing.

my parents have done a LOT of relief work in Africa and of all the places they've visited...they said that Rwanda was the most natively beautiful.

That was about a year after the fight though...maybe it's changed

I have some desire to see the west coast, places such as Senegal, Ivory Coast, Liberia, etc.... for the reason they they were the main departure places for slave ships to America. Historical.

Also, the west coast, from what I hear some incredibly beautiful places there. Had a friend that lived for a year in Kenya and loved it. Only place I have no real interest in is South Africa.

1-nigeria
2-kenya
3-ethiopia

i have been to ghana and togo. togo was hard b/c the language is french, so i communication was hard for me (i speak english and spanish). i love ghana, i cried so hard the day i arrived, and even harder on the day i had to leave. you aint lived until you've seen west african drumming and dance, makes your heart stop.

you do go through a celebrity thing as an american in west africa, they see american and think money, and everyone asks you for something. but it didnt stop me from having a great time and coming back. it wasnt until my third trip that i felt i met some people i could call family.

if anyone wants to go to ghana, hit me up. i made some real genuine friends who could hook you up. its VERY affordable to travel, my hotel room was small, but clean with a toilet and running water, cost me $6 USD a night.
