Ok, I am going home in December. I am planning on returning back at the end of Jan or Feb. Now here's the problem. I cancelled my Alberta Health Care before I left, but have been having some pretty serious health issues here. I will need to see my doctor when I return, but of course I have no coverage. I checked the website, but it doesn't have any real helpful info. I need to know, can I apply from out of country, or is there something temporary that I can get? My friend is from Toronto, and she said she had to be in the country for 3 months before she could get coverage, but again, I'm from alberta.

Any help is appreciated.

You can apply when you return but there is a 3 month wait before coverage kicks in.

Theoretically your "out of province" health care will cover you during that 3 months but there is NO allowance for out of country.

Your other option is:
a) Get someone from home to send you the application forms.
B) Fill them in here.
C) Send them back to your friend.
D) Have your friend / family member re-post them to AHCIP.
E) You will need an Alberta residencial address to make the application and to regain your coverage. You will also need to PROVE residence (AB drivers licence, utility bill (<6 months old) or something similar).

List your address in Saskatchewan and get immediate coverage there. It's not that far, and if it's that serious then it will be worth your while. I'd also spend the 300 or so dollars and get a complete physical here.

Good luck

If you need these things to verify your Alberta health care, make sure that your Alberta driver's license is valid. I went home for a month and couldn't drive this August because my license expired and I have no proof of being an Alberta resident as I have no health care or a tax return. It may work in reverse as well.

If your doctor knows you well, he might offer to see you right away and file the payment after your health insurance has been reinstated. Mine offered to do this a few years ago.
