Korea put up possibly one of their best performances ever in the game against taiwan last night and played witha lot of class and flair to win 8-0 in asian cup qualifying...

I know taiwan are nothing special and Korea should win easily but Korea really did play well and pressed them hard the whole game..

Some of the finishing was fantastic and if only Korea could play like they did last night in their big matches they would be a lot better of a team

Well done boys....

I wonder if all my students who got caught up in the nationalistic hooplah of the world cup give a rats about this result (or even know about it)

I too wondered if Koreans would drop soccer like mashimaro dolls, but I saw a lot of people in the subway station and on the street watching the game.

Because it's an international. Koreans only love internationals. It's part of their obsession of being appreciated by the rest of the world. As far as soccer goes, they don't really care about it. Look at the attendence figures for K-league games. Pathetic.

I don't blame them for poor K-league attendances. It's dire stuff. I once watched FC Seoul vs Someone or other and neither side could even string a few passes together. It sucked.

Taiwan are absolute pants, hence 8-0.
Koreans by and large weren't getting too excited because this isn't a 'football country.' During the WC every man and his dog starts waving the flag. The WC is just an excuse for many Koreans to do this. Many have no interest in the games. Check the viewing figures once Korea was knocked out of the last WC. Or indeed, any real knowledge of the game. Check the response to a perfectly legitimate Swiss goal.
Outside of the WC few are bothered about football. Next WC: hysteria, flag waving mania.

Shouting about an 8-0 drubbing of Taiwan is like boasting about beating up on the kids who ride to school on the special bus.

BTW, what happened to Arirang's claim of the world flocking here to witness the bestest supporters' culture ever and champion of the cheer for the chuku team? Ooops, forgot to turn off the Konglish button on my comp. Laughing

I was watching the game while eating with my students. I thought is was pretty pathetic that the announcers had as much enthusiasm in their voices for the 7th and 8th goals as they did for the first. It showed no class, if Canada is hammering some lowly team in hockey or if the U.S. is destroying an also-ran in basketball, the announcers tend to tone it down as the score gets out of hand.

Good for Korea I guess.
Korean soccer announcers are unrepentantly biased homers. (No pun intended) They don't even try to maintain any semblance of objectivity and are highly overemotional. Pathetic really.

It's sport, i mean who gets emotional about sport?, especially soccer right, and the fact that they have a bias towards their own country, disgusting.

I think we should do away with sport all together in korea and focus instead on friendly non competitive gatherings where everyone comes out a winner, something like taking the team out to a bunch of flowers where the goal (not competitive mind you, just the common goal) is to make the biggest daisy chain possible.

I would advise people not to watch anything involving international competition from any of the following countrys as the distressing nature of commentary style can compared to that of korea-

Australia
New Zealand
South Africa
United States
England
Ireland (north and south)
Scotland

eerrr...just make that every country in the world.

You have been warned.

Sarcasm is the lowest form of humour. That last post was positively laced with it. I personally don't like listening to announcers that whine and scream like little girls. Just a personal preference mind you. Maybe you like that.
In Canada, generally the announcers are pretty good. Some of them come off as homers a little but I think in general they are pretty restrained.
With hypernationalism running amuck in this country, I can't say I'm suprised really though.

He was talking about showing a little restraint when the score is already 6-0, going crazy when the 7th and 8th goals were scored. A little decorum would be nice. Fine, they are winning handily but don't scream like they just scored in overtime, it's called showing some class.
